Overview

Bird Verify checks that a person controls a phone number or email address by sending a code and validating the reply. It is best for product teams integrating verification through an API and needing multiple delivery routes. Its channel flexibility is useful, but message charges and country-level restrictions shape the real cost and reach.

Key features

SMS and email provide the core routes, with WhatsApp, voice and channel orchestration extending the options. Voice OTP is rolling out, so teams that require a settled voice-verification channel should not depend on it. For eligible cases, fallback sends a new code over the next channel without restarting the verification or extending its expiry—useful when the original route fails, but not a guarantee that every user can be reached.

Each session permits a bounded number of code checks, five by default; per-recipient send caps and a resend cooldown also constrain repeated attempts. Bird says codes are generated from a cryptographic random source, stored as HMAC-SHA256 hashes and compared in constant time. These are meaningful safeguards for login and account flows, though teams still need to configure delivery appropriately.

SMS numbers must use international format, and requests cannot select a channel unavailable in the country configuration. WhatsApp depends on a Bird-managed business number and authentication template, and may be restricted in some countries. Those dependencies make country-by-country channel planning important. Developers can use Node.js, Python, Go, PHP, cURL, CLI or MCP tools; the product also includes workspaces, API access controls, team roles and audit logs. Integrations span CRM, AI, customer support, data warehouse and developer-tool categories.

Pricing

The Verify plan costs 0.00 USD per free. It includes billed verification, with no separate verification fee; channel message charges still apply. That makes it a sensible entry point for teams that want to avoid a per-verification fee, but it is not cost-free at scale: SMS and other channel usage remains billable. Scheduled messages and 10DLC support are included. TOTP support is not.

There is no stated paid tier to compare against, so teams should weigh channel-message costs against their expected volume rather than treating the free plan as an unlimited messaging allowance.

Platforms

Bird Verify is offered through an API and web access. Its SDK language support includes TypeScript, Python, Go and PHP, and it supports webhooks and event webhooks. Phone-number features include inbound and outbound calling, SIP and call recording; dedicated IP is an option.

Who it's for

Choose Bird Verify if you are building verification into an app or service and value SMS, email and alternate-channel delivery under one verification flow. Teams managing multiple developers may also benefit from workspace roles, access controls and audit logs. It is a weaker fit for buyers seeking a standalone messaging interface, guaranteed voice availability now, or a route unconstrained by local channel availability.

Pros and cons

Pro: SMS, email, WhatsApp, voice and orchestration offer several ways to deliver a verification code.
Pro: Eligible fallback preserves the verification and its expiry when sending through another channel.
Pro: Bounded checks, send caps and cooldowns add practical controls against repeated attempts.
Con: Channel messages cost extra, so the 0.00 USD per free verification plan does not eliminate usage costs.
Con: Country configuration can restrict channel choice, while WhatsApp requires Bird-managed setup and voice OTP is still rolling out.

Alternatives

For teams whose main need is business texting rather than API-based verification, Textedly offers Android, iOS and web access, a free plan and trial, and a Basic plan at 29.00 USD per month for 500 messages; annual billing includes 20% more messages per month, or 600.

Text Request is an alternative with API and mobile, desktop and web platforms; its Enterprise plan is 575.00 USD per month for 20,000 included texts, 10 dashboards and additional texts at $0.032 each.

Sinch Engage may suit teams comparing messaging plans, with Basics at 3,000 SMS per month for one user and three automation workflows, and Conversations at 10,000 SMS per month for two users; prices are custom.

Apptoto starts at 30.00 USD per month, with an additional $10 for each added user, and offers monthly or annual subscriptions without a contract.

EZ Texting is a texting-focused alternative: Launch is 20.00 USD per month billed annually for up to 500 contacts, 6,000 yearly credits and one user, with a $0.04 overage credit and telecom fee.

Heymarket offers shared-inbox and two-way messaging, with its Standard plan at $49 per user/month billed annually and a two-user minimum.

MessageDesk offers unlimited one-to-one SMS and up to 48 phone numbers on Team (yearly), at 29.00 USD per year per user per month, with an annual contract and three-user minimum.

Sakari is another paid messaging alternative, with a Standard Plan starting at 25.00 USD per month and unlimited users and contacts.

Verdict

Bird Verify is the right choice for developers adding phone or email confirmation to a product who want several delivery channels, fallback and security controls in one service. Its strongest advantage is flexibility across verification routes without a separate verification fee. Look elsewhere if channel-message costs, country restrictions or the still-rolling-out voice route make its delivery model a poor fit.
