Overview

BESSER is a free, open-source low-code platform that turns software models into application components. A model can serve as a shared starting point for generating APIs, databases, agents, web applications and deployment artifacts, rather than remaining only a design document. The project is made by a research-led team at LIST and SnT / University of Luxembourg, based in Belval, Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg. BESSER was founded in 2023 and is available under the MIT license.

The platform brings conventional software modeling together with AI-assisted development. Its modeling covers class diagrams, object diagrams, state machines, agents and deployment specifications, and it supports modeling software that includes AI components. BESSER also offers a model repository and team collaboration, making it relevant to teams that want models to guide shared software work.

For readers comparing tools in this area, BESSER belongs among UML Modeling Software and No-code app builders, though its central emphasis is generating software from models.

Key features

Model-based generation

BESSER provides more than 15 generators covering databases, REST APIs, web apps, AI agents and deployment manifests. Generated Docker components can be used to deploy a running application from a model, extending the workflow from specification to deployment materials.

Modeling and generated interfaces

Users can model classes, objects, state machines, agents and deployment specifications. The BESSER GUI Creator generates complete React frontends deterministically from platform-independent GUI models, separating interface modeling from the generated application code.

AI-assisted workflows

The platform supports AI-assisted modeling and generation, including software models with embedded AI components. Its MCP server connects to Claude Desktop, Cursor and other MCP-aware agentic clients. BESSER Skills also integrate with Claude Code, Cursor and Copilot for model creation and code-generation workflows.

Extensibility and support

BESSER can be installed as a Python package with pip, while the full codebase can be cloned and run locally for extensions and generators. The project offers an on-page assistant without requiring an account, email support and weekly GitHub bug triage. For the Spec-Driven Agent free tier, no API key is required; any key supplied by a user is not stored.

Pricing

BESSER is free and open source, with a listed price of 0.00 USD per free. The plan is described as free and open source, with no freemium tier or hidden fees.

Platforms

BESSER supports web, Linux, macOS and Windows, and can be run as self-hosted software. Its API and Python package support programmatic use. The tested Python versions are 3.10, 3.11 and 3.12; Python 3.13 is not yet supported.

Who it's for

BESSER suits developers and teams who want diagrams and other models to produce working software components, rather than using models solely for documentation. Its breadth of generators, model repository and collaboration support can serve shared workflows, while the AI integrations are relevant to teams incorporating agentic clients or coding assistants into model and code-generation work.

It may be less suitable for someone seeking a conventional visual app builder with no modeling or Python-related setup. The platform’s stated Python version support also matters for users whose environment depends on Python 3.13.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free under the MIT license, with no freemium tier or hidden fees.
Pros: More than 15 generators span databases, APIs, web apps, AI agents and deployment manifests.
Pros: Includes model repository and team collaboration support, plus integrations with MCP-aware clients and coding assistants.
Cons: Python 3.13 is not supported yet.
Cons: Its model-first approach is a better fit for software engineering workflows than for users looking only for a simple visual app builder.

Alternatives

For related modeling and engineering tools, consider Umple, ArgoUML, BOUML, BridgePoint, Gaphor and PragmaDev Studio. Other options include Visual Paradigm and Horusec.

Verdict

BESSER stands out as a model-driven platform that connects diagrams and specifications to generated software, including APIs, databases, interfaces, AI agents and deployment artifacts. Its free MIT-licensed availability, broad generator set and integrations with AI development tools give it a clear role for teams pursuing low-code or AI-assisted software engineering. The main caveat in the stated platform requirements is its current lack of Python 3.13 support; otherwise, BESSER is a substantial option for users comfortable building from models.
