Overview

The free, GPL-2.0-licensed tool parses Bedrock world files and turns them into an offline, two-dimensional browser map, reports, and image outputs. It covers the Overworld and Nether across 256 layers, from bedrock to the build limit. That makes it a focused option for examining a specific world, rather than a general-purpose map service.

Bedrock Viz can change world files, so use a backup copy rather than your only save. Serving generated maps locally through Docker and NGINX adds flexibility, but requires care to avoid copying sensitive files into the served output.

Key features

Maps for both dimensions

The viewer combines Overworld and Nether maps with views for biomes, mobs, items, and spawnable blocks. Chunk boundaries, elevation shading, and distance measurement make it easier to inspect terrain and locate builds. The breadth suits players who want more than a simple overhead image, though browser restrictions can trim the experience when opening the viewer as a local file: block details on hover and elevation overlays may fail in Chrome. Firefox works best for local-file viewing.

Images, movies, and markers

Bedrock Viz can generate images showing world layers, biomes, block light, block height, and grass color. It can also create movies that move through world layers from bedrock to the build limit, but that output requires ffmpeg. Marker and waypoint support provides another way to organize map inspection.

Use caution with slime chunks

Slime chunk findings may be unreliable. Treat them as a lead to verify by confirming that slimes spawn before investing substantial work in a location.

Pricing

Bedrock Viz is free: the Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and covers Minecraft Bedrock Edition worlds under the GPL-2.0 license. It includes offline viewing and dimension maps, with no paid tier or seat and quota terms to weigh.

Platforms

Bedrock Viz supports Linux, macOS, Windows, and web-based viewing. Windows users can get a Windows 10 zip containing bedrock-viz.exe. macOS 10.15 and later are supported through Homebrew; Linux users are directed to download and compile the source, which makes setup less convenient for anyone who wants a ready-made Linux package. Generated maps can be served locally with Docker and NGINX.

The README also describes an Android-world backup workflow using DropSync with Dropbox, but says that method was only lightly tested. Because the tool may change world files, the backup workflow should not replace keeping a separate copy of the save.

Who it's for

Choose Bedrock Viz if you play Minecraft Bedrock Edition and want to inspect world layers, terrain, biomes, or other map details offline. It is a particularly good fit for users willing to work with local files, and for those who want image or movie outputs in addition to a map. Look elsewhere if you need a low-risk, no-setup way to view a save, or if you require slime chunk results you can rely on without in-world confirmation.

Pros and cons

Pros: The map spans both dimensions and 256 layers, with biome, mob, item, spawnable-block, chunk, elevation, and distance views for detailed inspection.
Pros: Image output covers several useful world properties, and movies add a way to visualize layers when ffmpeg is installed.
Cons: It can change world files, so safe use depends on making a backup first.
Cons: Local-file browser restrictions can disable viewer details, and slime chunk findings need confirmation.
Cons: Linux users must compile from source, and movie generation requires a separate ffmpeg dependency.

Alternatives

If the goal is editing binary data rather than mapping a Minecraft world, start with the Hex Editors category. For another world-map option, compare the Minecraft World Map Viewers list.

BinEd is a free option across Android, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, and suits readers looking for a free and open-source editor, including an Android app described as a free service. REHex is another free choice for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with GPL-2.0 licensing and packages for those systems.

For Linux and macOS, dhex is a free alternative. ImHex is a free open-source hex editor for Linux, macOS, and Windows; wxHexEditor is a free hex and disk editor for those same platforms. wxMEdit combines text, column, and hex editing, with hex mode supporting files up to 32GB. Windows users could consider Hex Editor Neo, whose free plan offers basic editing features with limited or no support. Mac users could also choose Hex Fiend, a free, open-source option available only on macOS.

Verdict

Bedrock Viz is a strong fit for Bedrock players who want a detailed, offline view of both dimensions and useful image outputs without paying for the tool. Choose it for its range of map layers and export options; look elsewhere if protecting a save from modification or avoiding local setup and browser limitations matters more than that depth.
