Overview

Founded in 1991, Battle.net connects a game library with installation, patching, news, shopping and social features. The desktop app launches games and can keep them current while running. Its library also offers free-to-play titles such as Overwatch 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone, although some games and in-game purchases cost extra. That makes the launcher a convenient home for Blizzard players, not a guarantee that every game or item is free.

Key features

Library, installation and updates

The desktop app gathers games in one place and handles installation and patches. World of Warcraft players depend on it: all versions and game modes are installed through Battle.net. Automatic updates while the app is running reduce the chore of keeping games current, but downloading and patching require an internet connection.

Store, news and social tools

Players can buy games and expansions, send digital gifts, and follow sales, trailers and patch notes. Messaging, voice chat, friend connections and real-time updates make Battle.net useful for keeping in touch around play sessions. These tools are strongest when friends use the same ecosystem; offline, social features and matchmaking are unavailable.

Mobile app and account security

The iOS and Android app brings shopping, news and social features to a phone, including chat, friend presence and friend requests. Users can also enable two-factor authentication. Blizzard recommends adding an authenticator and says two-step verification makes unauthorized account access extremely difficult, a worthwhile safeguard for an account tied to games and purchases.

Pricing

Battle.net desktop app and mobile app — 0.00 USD per free. The plan includes the Windows and Mac desktop apps and the iOS and Android mobile apps. There is no free trial because the apps are free to use; games and some in-game purchases may cost extra. Treat the free price as access to the launcher and companion app, not as a promise of a free game catalog.

Platforms

Battle.net supports Windows and macOS on desktop, with mobile apps for Android and iOS. Offline mode works only in select games. Internet access is required to download games and apply updates, while social features and matchmaking do not work offline, so it is a poor fit for players who need the full service without a connection.

Who it's for

Battle.net is the right choice for Blizzard players who want a single place to install and update games, follow game news, shop, and connect with friends. It is particularly central for World of Warcraft. Players seeking a broader, less Blizzard-focused launcher or dependable offline social play should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: One desktop app handles Blizzard game launches, installs and patches, including every World of Warcraft version and mode.
Pros: Chat, voice, friend updates, news and digital gifts extend the app beyond game installation.
Pros: Free mobile apps add shopping, chat, friend presence and account security on the go.
Cons: Games and some in-game purchases cost extra, so a free app does not mean a free library.
Cons: Downloads and updates need internet, and offline mode is limited to select games without social features or matchmaking.

Verdict

Choose Battle.net if Blizzard games are central to your library: it combines the required World of Warcraft installation route with updates, store access and social tools at no app cost. Look elsewhere if you need reliable offline functionality or a launcher built around a wider range of publishers.
