Overview

The service combines SFTP, FTPS, and FTP endpoints with browser-based access to S3, remote SFTP connectors, and managed AS2 messaging. Files can be stored in Amazon S3 or Amazon EFS. Custom identity providers support authentication and authorization controls for individual users, while the service can accommodate thousands of concurrent users and transfers involving PCI, PII, or HIPAA-regulated data.

This is a broad set of transfer tools rather than a simple file-sharing subscription. Charges can arise from protocols, data, messages, workflows, connector activity, and web app units, so organizations should account for the usage patterns they actually need. Servers can use up to three Availability Zones without an additional multi-AZ charge.

Key features

Protocol endpoints and storage: SFTP, FTPS, and FTP endpoints connect transfer clients to S3 or EFS. That makes Transfer Family a strong fit when external users need to exchange files directly with AWS-backed storage, rather than when the requirement is only occasional person-to-person sharing.
Identity and infrastructure controls: Custom identity providers allow tailored authentication and per-user authorization. CloudFormation templates and the Transfer Family Terraform module let teams define and deploy resources as code, which is useful for organizations managing AWS infrastructure through repeatable configurations.
Managed post-upload workflows: Workflows automate processing after files arrive through supported endpoints and can integrate with AWS Step Functions and AWS B2B Data Interchange for downstream work. They cannot be purchased alone; an SFTP, FTPS, or FTP endpoint is required, so workflow automation is an add-on to a transfer setup, not a standalone service.
Browser access: Authenticated users can access S3 through a browser-based file manager. Each web app unit supports up to 250 unique sessions per five-minute period. Web apps do not charge for uploads or downloads, although S3 requests and bandwidth remain chargeable.
SFTP connectors: Connectors send files to or retrieve them from remote SFTP servers, using S3 as the source or destination. A connector call includes directory listings of up to 1,000 items; larger listings may require additional calls.
AS2 messaging: Managed AS2 supports exchanging EDI documents with trading partners. Up to 50 MB is included per message, while larger messages are charged in 50 MB chunks, a relevant cost boundary for partners exchanging larger files.

Pricing

AWS Transfer Family is paid, with no upfront costs and usage-based charges rather than one fixed subscription. The pricing examples below use US East (N. Virginia) rates and show charges per month:

Plan or usage	Price	What it covers
SFTP, FTPS, or FTP endpoint	0.30 USD per month	Protocol-enabled server endpoint, billed at an hourly rate.
SFTP, FTPS, or FTP data transfer	0.04 USD per month	Usage-based charge for data uploaded and downloaded over these protocols.
Web app unit	0.50 USD per month	One unit, billed at an hourly rate, supports up to 250 unique sessions per five-minute period.
SFTP connector call	0.00 USD per month	Usage-based charge shown for calls to remote SFTP servers.
SFTP connector data transfer	0.40 USD per month	Usage-based charge for data sent or retrieved using connectors.
Workflow data processing	0.10 USD per month	Usage-based charge for data processed by workflow steps.

These are usage examples, not all-in monthly plans: the service bills according to enabled protocols, transferred data, messages, workflow processing, connector calls, or web app units. Web apps have no upload or download charge, but S3 requests and bandwidth still cost extra. AS2 messages above 50 MB incur charges per additional 50 MB chunk. A free plan is available, though no free-plan cap is given. This model fits teams able to estimate and manage activity by category; readers who want a predictable flat subscription may find it harder to budget.

Platforms

Transfer Family is available on the web, including browser-based access to S3. It also provides API access and supports all access protocols. The 50 GB maximum file size is a practical ceiling to consider when transfers involve very large files.

Who it's for

Transfer Family is best for organizations that already use AWS storage and need managed protocol endpoints, per-user controls, large numbers of concurrent users, or trading-partner exchanges. It is also a sensible choice for teams that want post-upload automation integrated with their AWS environment. It is less compelling for individuals or small teams seeking uncomplicated file sharing, or for buyers who need workflow automation without also provisioning a transfer endpoint.

Pros and cons

Pros

Several transfer modes in one service: SFTP, FTPS, FTP, browser access, SFTP connectors, and AS2 messaging cover distinct user, server, and partner workflows.
Flexible AWS integration: S3 and EFS storage, infrastructure-as-code support, and integrations with Step Functions and B2B Data Interchange suit established AWS operations.
Room for broad use: Thousands of concurrent users are supported, and servers can span up to three Availability Zones without an additional multi-AZ charge.
Per-user identity controls: Custom identity providers let organizations apply their own authentication and authorization rules.

Cons

Costs have multiple moving parts: Protocols, data, messages, workflows, connectors, and web app units can each contribute to the bill.
Workflows require a protocol endpoint: Teams seeking only managed post-upload processing cannot buy that capability by itself.
Web access does not eliminate storage charges: S3 requests and bandwidth remain chargeable even though web app uploads and downloads are not.

Alternatives

Compare file transfer services if you want to assess a broader set of options. For different priorities, consider these alternatives:

SendSafely may suit users seeking a freemium option with a free plan and free trial, across mobile, desktop, web, API, and extension platforms. Its Basic plan is 10.00 USD per month and includes 250 MB per month, control expiration, and personal use.
rclone is the alternative to consider for a free, open-source project available across Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, web, API, and self-hosted environments.
pCloud is worth considering for cross-platform storage with a free plan that includes 10 GB and requires no credit card; it also offers a free trial.
Wing FTP Server may be a better fit when a free FTP/HTTP server is sufficient: its Free Edition includes one domain, 10 user accounts and 10 connections per domain, and is available for self-hosted and web use among other platforms.
Progress MOVEit Transfer is another paid file-transfer option with a free trial and availability on web, self-hosted, and several client platforms.
SFTPGo may suit readers looking for a freemium option spanning self-hosted and web deployments. Its Tiny plan starts at 50.00 EUR per month with 25 GiB storage and 250 GiB monthly transfer.
Files.com is a paid alternative with a free trial; its Starter plan costs 199.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 10 Full Users, 50 System Users, two outbound connections, and 1 TB monthly storage.
ExaVault offers a free self-hosted appliance for up to 50 users, with self-serve support; consider it when that deployment model is preferable.

Verdict

AWS Transfer Family is the right choice for AWS-based organizations that need managed file-transfer protocols, partner messaging, storage integration, and controlled access at scale. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of transfer modes and AWS workflow integration; its clearest reason to look elsewhere is the usage-based bill, especially if your needs are simple or you cannot justify an endpoint just to access workflows.
