Overview

OPNsense is an open-source firewall and routing platform built on FreeBSD, best suited to people and organizations prepared to run their own network appliance.

Key features

Its stateful firewall handles IPv4 and IPv6 and provides live views of traffic that is blocked or passed, giving administrators visibility alongside policy control. VPN options include IPsec, OpenVPN, Tinc and WireGuard, with site-to-site VPN support; that range suits mixed network setups without committing to a single VPN technology.

For intrusion prevention, OPNsense uses Suricata with Proofpoint Emerging Threats Open rules. Optional ET PRO and ET PRO Telemetry rulesets add commercial choices. CARP provides automatic hardware failover with state synchronization, a useful resilience feature for deployments where a single appliance failure would interrupt network service.

The modular Model View Controller framework supports extensions and API functionality. Authentication integrations include LDAP, Active Directory, RADIUS and captive portals, with 802.1X available through a plugin. OPNsense also supports SSL inspection and publishes weekly security updates, alongside two major releases each year.

Business Edition is tested twice yearly for LINCE security certification by independent evaluator jtsec. That verification may matter to organizations with assurance requirements, while the Community Edition keeps the platform under an OSI-approved 2-clause BSD license.

Pricing

The Community Edition costs 0.00 USD per free and provides an open-source, self-hosted x86-64 installation. It is the natural starting point for individuals and organizations that want the core platform without a commercial subscription. There is no free trial; the Community Edition itself is free.

Business Edition is offered for 149.00 EUR per year, billed €149,00 / year, for one installation. It includes a commercial firmware repository, official OVA image, OPNcentral and GeoIP database. This subscription suits professional deployments that need those commercial features; it does not change the one-installation allowance.

The three-year option is 399.00 EUR per year, billed €399,00 for 3 years (sale price), also for one installation and with the same listed inclusions. Its stated price is a sale price, so buyers should weigh that term rather than assume it is a permanent rate. Business Edition and Business Edition 3Yr also appear as plans with custom pricing.

The Business Support Subscription includes remote email and phone support, implementation help, migration assistance, troubleshooting and hot fixes, with two hours included. That support is relevant to teams that want direct help during deployment or maintenance; the included two hours set a clear boundary on the stated allowance.

Platforms

OPNsense is available through API, self-hosted and web platforms, with a hybrid deployment model. Installation is limited to x86-64, so it is not suitable for a different processor architecture. Official setup guides cover AWS images, OVA images and an Azure Virtual Appliance, while the Business Edition subscription includes an official OVA image.

Who it's for

OPNsense fits network administrators, technically capable individuals and organizations that want control over firewall, routing, VPN and intrusion-prevention functions in a self-hosted platform. Community Edition is the sensible fit when open-source licensing and core functionality are priorities. Business Edition is aimed at companies, enterprises and professionals who want a selective upgrade path and additional commercial features; support buyers should also account for the two included hours.

It is a weaker fit for users who need turnkey managed networking, a non-x86-64 installation, or broad included support without a subscription. Its extensive capabilities are most valuable when someone can configure and maintain the platform.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free, BSD-licensed Community Edition makes a capable firewall and routing platform accessible without a subscription.
Pros: Multiple VPN technologies, CARP failover and IPv4/IPv6 firewalling cover varied network and resilience needs.
Pros: Weekly security updates and two major releases annually provide a regular maintenance cadence.
Cons: Installation is restricted to x86-64, excluding other architectures.
Cons: Business Support includes only two hours, which may be insufficient for organizations needing sustained assistance.
Cons: Business Edition is priced per installation, and its three-year rate is explicitly a sale price.

Alternatives

pfSense is worth comparing for readers who want another free, open-source firewall and router option, or who need Linux support or a free trial. IPFire is a straightforward alternative for readers looking for a free open-source firewall operating system without feature tiers or license renewals.

Arista NG Firewall offers a freemium option with basic security and connectivity features, which may suit readers seeking a more limited starting point. NethSecurity is another freemium, open-source option for readers considering a Linux or web-accessible deployment.

For paid alternatives, compare FortiGate, WatchGuard Firebox and Forcepoint Next Generation Firewall. AWS Network Firewall is a paid option with API and web platforms.

Verdict

Choose OPNsense if you want a self-hosted, open-source network platform that combines firewalling, routing, VPN and intrusion prevention, and you can manage an x86-64 installation. Look elsewhere if you need a different architecture or more extensive included support than the Business subscription’s two hours.
