Overview

GitLab Duo Code Suggestions is a coding assistant that completes and generates code inside supported editors. It is best suited to developers who want in-editor help across a broad language mix, especially teams already using GitLab or needing a self-managed option. Its free access lowers the barrier to trying it, but reliance on GitLab’s AI service means availability can vary under high demand.

Key features

Suggestions can complete code blocks, help define function logic, generate tests, and draft common patterns such as regular expressions. That focus makes it useful for speeding up routine coding work; it is not a conversational assistant or an autonomous coding agent, and it offers no terminal access.

GitLab lists more than 14 supported languages, including C++, C#, Go, Java, JavaScript, Python, Rust, and TypeScript. Codebase indexing is supported, giving the product a broader basis for suggestions than purely local completion. Editor support spans Visual Studio Code, GitLab Web IDE, Visual Studio 2022 on Windows, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, and Eclipse, so it can fit varied development setups.

GitLab says private, non-public customer code stored in GitLab is not used for training, and that it does not train generative AI models. For Fireworks AI requests, the provider discards inputs and outputs after returning results, except when prompt caching is enabled for Code Suggestions. Suggestions are scanned to help prevent sharing sensitive data such as passwords or API keys. GitLab maintains SOC 2 Type 2 reports for GitLab.com and GitLab Dedicated, and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for its SaaS subscriptions, GitLab.com, and GitLab Dedicated. These safeguards may matter to teams assessing data handling, though GitLab also warns that high demand can degrade performance or cause downtime.

Pricing

Code Suggestions is available on the GitLab.com Free tier with GitLab Credits, making it a practical starting point for individuals and teams evaluating in-editor assistance. The free access is subject to GitLab Credits; no quota amount is given.

GitLab Duo Pro costs 19.00 USD per user per month and includes Code Suggestions and organizational controls. It is available for SaaS, self-managed, and Dedicated deployments, making it the clearest fit for organizations that need team controls or deployment flexibility. A free trial is available, but its length and renewal terms are not given.

GitLab Duo Agent Platform uses usage-based billing with custom pricing, but Code Suggestions itself does not provide agent mode. Readers seeking an autonomous coding agent should not choose this product on the assumption that suggestions include one.

Platforms

Code Suggestions supports extension, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows environments. Self-managed GitLab instances can use it through a secure connection to GitLab.com, so self-management does not mean the AI service runs wholly offline.

Who it's for

Choose it if you want code completion and generation across several established editors and languages, particularly within a GitLab workflow or a self-managed GitLab deployment. It is less suitable if your priority is chat-based coding help, terminal actions, or an agent that can carry out tasks independently.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free-tier access with GitLab Credits offers a low-cost way to begin; support for multiple editors and more than 14 languages accommodates varied development environments.
Pros: GitLab describes concrete data protections, including training exclusions for private GitLab code and scanning intended to prevent sensitive information from being shared.
Cons: High demand can cause degraded performance or unexpected downtime, a meaningful risk when developers depend on suggestions during work.
Cons: No chat assistance, agent mode, or terminal access limits it to suggestion-oriented work rather than broader coding workflows.

Alternatives

For broader DevOps tooling, compare DevOps Platforms or DevSecOps Platforms. If the main need is pipeline tooling rather than code completion, Continuous Integration Software is the more relevant category.

Bitbucket Pipelines is a better fit when build automation is the priority: it has a free forever plan for up to five users, unlimited public and private repositories, 1 GB of LFS storage, and 50 build minutes per month. Jenkins is another free option for readers seeking a self-hosted software tool rather than editor-based code suggestions.

Readers comparing test-focused tools can consider Captain, which offers flaky-test tracking and quarantine, or Cypress, whose free Starter plan includes 10 users and 500 test results per month. HyperExecute offers a free tier with 300 testing minutes and up to two concurrent sessions, while Qualflare starts with a free Starter plan covering one project and 200 test cases. For build configuration options, TeamCity has a free on-premises plan; for test execution hours and parallel runners, Testery offers a Growth plan with 10 test execution hours and 10 parallel runners.

Explore Test Flakiness Management Software, Game Build Automation Software, or Mobile CI/CD Software if one of those narrower workflows is your main requirement.

Verdict

GitLab Duo Code Suggestions is a strong fit for developers who want editor-based completion and generation across a wide range of languages, with GitLab’s stated privacy protections and a free-tier entry point. Choose it for suggestions, not an all-purpose AI coding partner: the lack of chat and agent capabilities, plus possible service disruption at peak demand, are good reasons to look elsewhere.
