Overview

Founded in 2013, ATLauncher brings pack discovery and instance management into a single app. Its sources include ATLauncher, CurseForge, Modrinth, Technic, and FTB, with exports for CurseForge .zip and Modrinth .mrpack. The launcher is open source and free, though it does not remove Minecraft’s account requirement.

One important limitation is for creators: ATLauncher no longer accepts new pack submissions to its own platform. It directs pack makers to share through Modrinth or CurseForge instead, so it is a less suitable destination for authors seeking a new home for their packs.

Key features

Separate instances: Install multiple instances of a pack without changing earlier installs. This is useful for maintaining distinct configurations, though it means players manage separate copies rather than one evolving setup.
Pack catalog and imports: Browse the built-in catalog or import packs, with support for multiple mod loaders. Pack availability spans five sources, giving players a choice of ecosystems within one launcher.
Java and accounts: ATLauncher selects the Java version a pack requires and supports multiple accounts, including Mojang and Microsoft accounts and Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
Mod management: Instance tools can automatically download and install mods, maps, and resource packs from CurseForge and Modrinth. That brings common add-ons into the instance workflow without requiring players to assemble every component themselves.
Backups and servers: One-click save backups offer a straightforward safeguard for worlds, while built-in tools let players create and run servers for ATLauncher modpacks.

Pricing

ATLauncher costs 0.00 USD per free. There is no free trial because the launcher is free to use; the essential qualification is that playing its modpacks requires a paid Minecraft account. The launcher fee is not the same as access to Minecraft itself.

The free plan includes the launcher’s pack browsing, instance, Java, mod, backup, and server tools. There are no paid tiers to compare, but pack creators cannot submit new packs to ATLauncher’s own platform.

Platforms

ATLauncher runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its download page also offers a Jar download, giving users another distribution format beyond the named desktop downloads.

Who it's for

ATLauncher suits Minecraft players who move between modpacks, want distinct instances, or value automatic Java selection and one-click save backups. It is also a fit for players who want to create or run servers for ATLauncher packs from the launcher itself. It is not the right choice for someone who needs to play without a purchased Minecraft account or for pack authors trying to submit a new release to ATLauncher’s catalog.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with packs from five sources, separate instances, automatic Java selection, and mod installation support for CurseForge and Modrinth content.
Pros: One-click save backups and in-launcher server tools add practical support beyond pack installation.
Cons: Playing modpacks requires a purchased Minecraft account, so the free launcher does not make the game itself free.
Cons: New packs can no longer be submitted to ATLauncher’s own platform, limiting its role for pack creators.

Alternatives

Minecraft Launchers is a useful category to compare if you are still choosing a launcher, while Minecraft Modpack Builders is the relevant category for building packs.

Prism Launcher is another free, open-source option for Windows, macOS, and Linux; consider it if you want to compare desktop launchers without a fee.
FTB App is a free option for the same desktop platforms, but its free plan contains ads.
GDLauncher is free on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with no premium tier and no overlay.
CurseForge offers free mod and modpack access through a web catalog; choose it if web access is enough rather than a desktop launcher.
Technic Launcher is a free, open-source desktop alternative for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Modrinth App is another desktop alternative for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and is fully open source.
MultiMC is a free desktop alternative; its Patreon support option costs 5.00 USD per contact and provides an app credit mention and Discord role.
packwiz is a free, open-source option for Windows.

Verdict

Choose ATLauncher if you want a free, open-source desktop launcher that combines multi-source pack discovery with separate instances, Java handling, backups, and server tools. Its strongest case is the breadth of pack and instance management in one place; look elsewhere if submitting new packs to ATLauncher is central to your plans, or if you need to play without buying Minecraft.
