Overview

WPS PDF covers everyday document work, from reading and annotating to editing text, converting, compressing, and signing. It also includes page tools for combining files, changing page order, splitting documents, and inserting or deleting pages. That makes it a capable all-rounder for routine PDF tasks rather than a narrow converter or reader.

AI features add a second use: WPS AI can summarize PDFs, explain selected passages, translate text or whole documents, and answer questions about a file. WPS says files are processed on-device unless you choose to upload them to the cloud. Cloud sync connects supported devices, while storage ranges from 1GB to 20GB depending on plan.

The editor belongs to a suite with Writer, Spreadsheet, and Presentation, and WPS Office supports Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint formats including .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx. This is a practical advantage for workflows that alternate between office documents and PDFs. WPS, founded in 1988 and headquartered in Singapore, also provides a Help Center, online customer service, WPS Academy, feedback, and technical specifications resources.

Key features

Editing and document handling

Text editing, annotation, OCR, conversion, and compression cover a useful range of common tasks. Page organization is similarly complete: users can merge files, split documents, reorder pages, and add or remove pages. Together, these tools reduce the need to switch apps for basic document cleanup.

AI, forms, and security

WPS AI can summarize, explain, translate, and answer questions about PDF content. The Pro+ plan includes essential AI tools with usage limits, so readers who expect frequent AI assistance should weigh those limits rather than assume unrestricted access. The editor detects fillable fields, supports form completion and creation, and adds electronic signatures.

Security controls include encryption, privacy protection, restrictions on copying, printing, and editing, watermarks, and digital signatures. Local processing unless cloud upload is chosen will appeal to people handling sensitive files, while cross-device cloud sync is available for those who want continuity between devices.

Browser and device support

WPS PDF supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and a Chrome extension. The extension can read, edit, fill, convert, and AI-chat with PDFs in a browser, making it useful for browser-first work without giving up the core PDF functions.

Pricing

WPS PDF Editor uses a freemium model, with a free plan, a 3-day trial, and paid plans from $5.83/mo (annual). The free plan is the sensible starting point for occasional work, but the paid plans specify expanded storage and capabilities that matter for regular editing and conversion.

WPS Standard: Custom pricing. It includes 1 GB of cloud storage, 47 file formats, and 46 languages. That is a modest storage allowance, better suited to lighter use than a large synced document library.
WPS Pro+: 5.83 USD per year, billed $69.99/Year. It adds full PDF editing and conversion, unlimited templates, advanced text recognition, full electronic signature, 20 GB cloud storage, essential AI tools with usage limits, and no advertising. This is the clearest fit for an individual who needs the full editing and signature toolkit, provided the AI quota and storage suit their use.
WPS Pro+ Sharing Plan: 3.00 USD per year, billed $41.99/Year/user, Save 40%. It requires at least 2 users; each member gets Pro+ benefits and 20 GB private cloud storage, and members can be added or removed at any time. It fits a small group that can use the seats, not a solo buyer looking for the lowest entry price.

Platforms

Use WPS PDF on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, the web, or through its Chrome extension. Cloud synchronization spans Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and web, while the extension offers browser-based PDF reading, editing, form filling, conversion, and AI chat.

Who it's for

WPS PDF is a strong match for people who need more than viewing and markup: regular editors, form users, and readers who want AI help with long documents will find the broad toolset relevant. It also makes sense for users already working in WPS Writer, Spreadsheet, or Presentation, or those who move between supported desktop and mobile devices.

It is less compelling for someone who only needs occasional basic PDF handling, or for a solo user considering the sharing plan solely for its lower per-user figure. Readers who need uncapped AI access should also look closely at the usage limits attached to Pro+.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad PDF coverage: Editing, OCR, conversion, compression, page management, forms, and signatures span many routine workflows.
Useful AI range: Summaries, explanations, translations, and document questions support several ways of working through PDF content.
Local processing option: WPS says files stay on the device unless the user chooses cloud upload, an important option for privacy-conscious users.
Cross-platform workflow: Desktop, mobile, web, and browser extension access pair with cloud sync and a wider office suite.

Cons

AI access has limits on Pro+: Essential AI tools are subject to usage limits, which may constrain frequent users.
Storage varies by plan: Standard has 1 GB versus 20 GB on Pro+ plans, a meaningful difference for cloud-heavy workflows.
Sharing requires multiple seats: The Pro+ Sharing Plan has a 2-user minimum, so it is not the economical route for an individual.
Trial is brief: The free trial lasts 3 days, leaving little time for a long evaluation.

ONLYOFFICE PDF Editor is another freemium option, with platforms including self-hosted and API support as well as desktop, mobile, and web.
Smallpdf offers a free plan across web, Windows, Android, and iOS, and its free trial lasts 7 days; consider it if a longer trial is useful.
PDF Candy has a free web and desktop plan with page and hourly restrictions, no batch processing, and limited file size; consider it if those restrictions suit lighter use.
PDFgear is a free option across web, desktop, and mobile, with a 100 MB per-PDF cap for its online editor.
iLovePDF offers a free Basic plan with limited tools and document processing.
Foxit PDF Editor is a paid alternative with no free plan; its PDF Editor plan costs 129.99 USD per year and includes DMS and 300 AI credits/month.

Sejda PDF Editor offers a Web Week Pass with 7 days of web access and no desktop access.

Verdict

Choose WPS PDF Editor if you want a wide set of editing, page, form, signature, and AI tools across devices, especially when your work also touches WPS office documents. The main reason to look elsewhere is a mismatch between your needs and its plan limits: modest 1 GB Standard storage, limited Pro+ AI usage, or a sharing plan that requires at least two users.
