Overview

Arm Keil MDK is a development environment for embedded software targeting Cortex-M and Ethos-U processors. Its workflows can center on an IDE, command-line tools, or continuous integration. MDK v6 brings together Keil Studio extensions for Visual Studio Code, Keil μVision, Arm Compiler for Embedded, and Arm Fixed Virtual Platform models.

Rather than making target resources inseparable from the toolchain, MDK uses independently addable software packs. These can provide device and board support, software components, middleware, code templates, and example projects. The listed target range also includes Armv8-M, SecurCore and legacy Arm microcontrollers, and Fast Models.

Keil MDK is a specialized choice for embedded development, with integrated debugging and flashing, RTOS support, and compatibility with hardware probes. Its range of tools and packs gives developers several ways to organize target-specific work without relying on only one editor or build workflow.

Key features

IDE and command-line workflows

MDK v6 supports IDE-based and command-line development across major operating systems. The Keil Studio pack for Visual Studio Code supports CMSIS workflows and includes an integrated debugger, along with extensions for creating, building, and testing embedded applications. Keil μVision is another IDE option, but it is available only on Windows hosts.

Targets, packs, and integrations

Software packs let developers add target support and reusable software components independently of the toolchain. MDK v6 feature listings include CMSIS-FreeRTOS, Keil RTX5, MDK-Middleware, and IoT clients. For debugging connections, the listed options include CMSIS-DAP, ULink, and third-party debug adapters; integrated flashing and debugging are also supported.

Security and safety options

The MDK-Middleware Network component uses Arm Mbed TLS to secure TCP/IP communication. Arm also says it maintains administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of non-public information.

The Professional edition adds Arm Compiler for Embedded FuSa, a FuSa C library, and a functional safety run-time system. Those additions make Professional the edition to consider when functional-safety tooling is required, while the available facts do not specify certification or qualification details.

Pricing

Keil MDK has a freemium model and offers a free plan. The Community plan is for non-commercial use and includes Keil Studio, Keil μVision, and Cortex-M device support; its price is not listed. The Essential and Professional plans are listed at one license per user, but their prices are not listed.

For commercial use, the listed Keil MDK v6 Essential plan costs 99.00 USD per month, billed at $99.00 per month per license. It includes all Cortex-M cores, μVision, VS Code extensions, and API access. Keil MDK v6 Professional costs 199.00 USD per month, billed at $199.00 per month per license. It includes Essential, Arm Virtual Hardware, Arm Compiler for Embedded FuSa, and legacy tools including Arm Compiler 5.

Platforms

MDK v6 supports development through IDE or command-line workflows across Linux, macOS, and Windows. The listed platforms also include API, extension, and web. The Windows-only limitation applies specifically to Keil μVision, rather than to every MDK workflow. The product's listed targets include Arm Cortex-M, Armv8-M, SecurCore and legacy Arm microcontrollers, Ethos-U processors, and Fast Models.

Who it's for

Keil MDK is aimed at developers building embedded software for supported Arm microcontrollers and Ethos-U processors. Its command-line and continuous-integration workflows suit projects that build outside a desktop IDE, while Keil Studio offers a Visual Studio Code path for CMSIS-oriented development. Developers choosing an edition should distinguish the non-commercial Community plan from the priced commercial v6 plans, and consider Professional if its listed FuSa tools or legacy compiler support are needed.

Pros and cons

Pros

Supports IDE, command-line, and continuous-integration workflows.
Software packs add device support, middleware, components, templates, and examples separately from the toolchain.
Includes integrated debugging and flashing, RTOS support, and support for multiple hardware probe options.
Professional adds functional-safety tools and legacy-tool access.
Offers a free non-commercial Community plan.

Cons

Keil μVision is restricted to Windows hosts.
Prices for Community, Essential, and Professional are not listed in the supplied plan details.
The Community plan is limited to non-commercial use and Cortex-M device support.

Alternatives

For other embedded development environments, consider PlatformIO IDE, Arduino IDE, or MPLAB X IDE. Other listed options include C2000Ware, CS+, ESP-IDF Extension for VS Code, nRF Connect for VS Code, and Eclipse IDE. Browse Embedded Development IDEs, Embedded Systems Toolchains, IoT Development Tools, C++ IDEs, and IDE Software for more options by category.

Verdict

Arm Keil MDK brings together embedded development tools, target support packs, debugging, and multiple workflow options for projects across its listed Arm targets. The free Community plan provides a non-commercial route into Keil Studio and μVision, while commercial v6 plans have clearly listed monthly prices for Essential and Professional. The main practical caveat is that μVision itself requires a Windows host; developers using Linux or macOS will need to choose another supported workflow, such as the command line or Keil Studio.

Support is available through cases, a community forum, documentation, and learning videos.
