Overview

BitComet is a free client for BitTorrent, HTTP and FTP downloads, built for people who run several download tasks at once. Its mix of cross-protocol sources, scheduling and remote desktop access gives it more reach than a torrent-only queue manager.

It is a sensible fit for personal, non-commercial use, especially when you want control over a busy download queue. The licence restriction makes it the wrong choice for commercial use.

Key features

Finding sources and finishing transfers

BitComet supports magnet links, HTTP seeding, DHT and UDP tracker Protocol v2. DHT can find peers without a tracker, while Long-Term Seeding Technology looks for additional seeds when a download stalls near completion. These options can help with source discovery, but they cannot ensure that a file with no available sources will finish.

Cross Protocol Downloading can use HTTP, FTP and eMule sources during a BitTorrent download. That is a practical advantage when matching sources exist; it does not mean every torrent has alternate sources. Selective download lets you choose which files within a task to retrieve, which is useful when a torrent contains more than you need.

Queue management and remote access

Global and per-task upload and download limits, bandwidth scheduling and automatic shutdown make BitComet better suited to a sustained queue than to occasional one-off downloads. You can reserve bandwidth for other activity or schedule transfers around it. Intelligent Disk Caching uses memory to reduce hard-drive read and write frequency, a targeted benefit rather than a general performance promise.

Video preview prioritizes a file's header and tail so playback can begin while it is still downloading. The cloud service lets the BitComet Mobile app connect to the desktop client behind NAT or a firewall, using end-to-end encryption. That combination suits users who want to monitor a home download queue remotely.

BitComet also supports Windows ICF and ICS configuration and UPnP router port mapping. Its license says data exchanged with trackers and other users is anonymous, contains no personal information, and that BitComet does not collect or reveal user privacy. This is a statement about the data and practices described by the license, not a blanket assurance about networks or downloaded content.

Pricing

BitComet: 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is for private personal use only and excludes commercial purposes. It includes the client without a paid tier, making it suitable for personal download queues; businesses and other commercial users should choose a tool whose licence permits that use.

Platforms

BitComet supports Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. Its download page also offers Docker container images for GUI and WebUI, and the client includes a web interface and remote control. Support for 53 languages broadens its reach, while a help wiki, support forum and email contact provide support channels.

Who it's for

Choose BitComet if you manage multiple simultaneous downloads and value bandwidth scheduling, per-task controls, alternate protocol sources or remote access to a desktop client. It is less appropriate if commercial use is essential or if you only need a minimal torrent client without these extra controls.

Pros and cons

Pros: BitTorrent downloads can draw on HTTP, FTP and eMule sources, giving a transfer more possible source types when those sources exist.
Pros: Global and per-task speed limits, scheduling and automatic shutdown make a large queue easier to fit around other network use.
Pros: Video preview and encrypted remote access cover two useful needs: checking a download before it finishes and reaching a desktop client behind NAT or a firewall.
Cons: The free licence is limited to private, personal, non-commercial use, so it is not suitable for commercial workflows.
Cons: Long-Term Seeding and cross-protocol sources can help only when additional seeds or matching HTTP, FTP or eMule sources are available.

Alternatives

Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Software and Download Manager Software offer broader category comparisons.

BiglyBT is another free option, with support for Android, Linux, macOS, web and Windows.
Resilio Sync is also free for non-commercial personal use, but requires a license to activate and has no expiration date; consider it if that licensing arrangement better suits you.
qBittorrent is free open-source software with no ads, a fit for readers who prioritize those terms.
Transmission includes all features in its free plan, with no ads or tracking.
WebTorrent is free, non-commercial desktop software under the MIT License.
Deluge is a no-charge BitTorrent client with its source repository published on GitHub.
Vuze has a free tier with ads and offers, or Vuze Plus at 3.99 USD per month for unlimited DVD burns, Play Sooner and no ads.
Tixati is a free BitTorrent client with optional donations.

Verdict

BitComet is a strong choice for personal users who need to manage many downloads and value alternate sources, queue controls and remote access in one client. Its defining limitation is the personal-use-only licence: choose another option if your work is commercial, or if you do not need BitComet's broader download toolkit.
