Overview

Typecast converts text into speech intended to reflect context and emotion. The Studio advertises more than 700 AI voices, with controls for emotion, speed, and dynamics. That range gives narrators room to shape delivery, though the practical output allowance depends on download credits rather than how often they generate or preview speech.

Key features

Studio and voice controls

Voice generation and playback are unlimited on every Studio plan, which makes repeated script adjustments feasible. Credits are consumed when audio is downloaded, so the free Studio tier is a brief evaluation option rather than a sustainable publishing plan: it provides 3,000 lifetime download credits, roughly five minutes, trial voices, three projects, 1 GB of media storage, and attribution is required. Paid plans add monthly credits, more storage, higher export resolution, and voice-cloning slots.

API for automated speech

The API targets content automation, app services, and conversational agents, with use cases including creator narration, audiobooks, podcasts, AI tutors, and contact-center applications. Typecast states streaming TTS latency of 170–210 ms, a relevant consideration for interactive speech. SDKs and integrations include Python, JavaScript, Zapier, Google Sheets, n8n, and Make. The API has no SSML support, which is a meaningful limitation for developers who rely on that markup standard to control speech output.

Languages, formats, and privacy

Typecast supports 35 languages and exports audio in MP3 and WAV. Voice cloning is available. Its privacy policy describes access controls, encryption of unique identifying information, security software, physical access controls, and breach-notification procedures. These measures address several layers of data protection, though they do not replace a buyer's own review of suitability for sensitive workloads.

Pricing

Studio and API have separate free options and paid tiers, so choose based on whether you are producing downloadable media or generating speech through software.

Plan	Price	Allowance and limits
Free (Studio)	0.00 USD per free	3,000 lifetime download credits (about five minutes), trial voices, 3 projects, 1 GB storage; attribution required.
Basic	5.00 USD per month	30,000 credits/month, 1 voice-cloning slot, 5 GB storage, 1080p exports.
Plus	19.00 USD per month	40,000 credits/month, 1 voice-cloning slot, 30 GB storage, 4K exports.
Pro	29.00 USD per month	75,000 credits/month, 2 voice-cloning slots, 50 GB storage, 4K exports.
Business	69.00 USD per month	200,000 credits/month, 10 voice-cloning slots, 100 GB storage, 4K exports.
Free (API)	0.00 USD per month	15k credits/month, concurrency limit 2; noncommercial use and attribution required.
Lite (API)	15.00 USD per month	200k credits/month, $0.075 per 1k credits, overage $0.09 per 1k credits, concurrency limit 5, 50 custom voice slots.

Basic is the lowest-cost paid Studio choice for an individual who needs regular downloads, but its 5 GB storage and 1080p ceiling are tighter than the higher tiers. Plus raises storage and export resolution without increasing voice-cloning capacity beyond one slot; Pro is the step up for 75,000 monthly credits and a second slot. Business is aimed at heavier output or multiple cloned voices, with 200,000 credits and ten slots. Studio plans are billed monthly, and unlimited generation does not mean unlimited downloadable output.

The free API plan can support evaluation or noncommercial use, but its attribution and commercial-use restrictions rule it out for paid products. Lite is the paid API option shown, increasing monthly credits and concurrency and providing custom voice slots; its per-credit rate and overage charge matter for variable or growing usage. Typecast also offers a free trial. Enterprise inquiries and additional pricing or product questions go through its support team.

Platforms

Typecast is available on the web, Android, and iOS, as well as through its API. The mobile app supports syncing across devices, useful for continuing work between phone and browser. The API broadens its reach to app and service workflows, but developers should account for the lack of SSML support and the plan's concurrency and credit limits.

Who it's for

Typecast suits creators making narration, audiobooks, or podcasts who want a large voice selection and adjustable delivery, and developers integrating generated speech into applications, conversational agents, or automated workflows. Voice cloning and higher paid credit allowances can serve recurring production needs. It is a weaker fit for commercial API projects that need to start on a free tier, for users who require SSML, or for Studio users expecting downloads to be unlimited because playback is.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 700 advertised Studio voices and controls for emotion, speed, and dynamics support varied narration.
Pros: Unlimited Studio generation and playback make script iteration possible before spending download credits.
Pros: API integrations span common developer and automation tools, with stated streaming latency of 170–210 ms.
Pros: Paid Studio tiers scale monthly credits, storage, export resolution, and voice-cloning slots.
Cons: The free Studio allowance is just 3,000 lifetime download credits, roughly five minutes, and uses trial voices.
Cons: Free API audio is noncommercial and requires attribution, limiting its usefulness for commercial launches.
Cons: The API does not support SSML, which may exclude workflows that depend on it.

Alternatives

For a different voice-generation option, compare the AI Voice Generators category and the Text-to-Speech Software category.

Choose Fish Audio if its listed free tier of 8,000 monthly credits and up to seven minutes of generation is a better match for your evaluation needs. Choose Speechify if its free plan's ten voices and 1.5x maximum speed better suit your priorities, or if you want its listed 60+ language Premium plan. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech is worth considering when API and web access with a stated allowance of 0 to 4 million free characters for Standard voices better fits your usage model.

NaturalReader is another freemium option. Cartesia Sonic is another API and web option with free and paid plans. Murf AI is another freemium alternative with API, web, and Windows access. Amazon Polly is a paid API and web option with a free plan. CereProc is a paid alternative available across mobile, desktop, web, API, and self-hosted platforms.

Verdict

Typecast is a strong fit for creators who need expressive narration and developers who want an API connected to familiar automation tools. Its large advertised voice library, mobile access, and scalable paid plans are compelling, but credit-based downloads and the free API's commercial restriction need to fit your workflow. Choose it when those controls and integrations matter more than SSML support or a generous free commercial API allowance.
