Overview

ares focuses on accurate emulation and preservation, spanning arcade hardware and consoles such as Atari 2600, WonderSwan, ColecoVision, NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, and PlayStation. The project counts 34 supported console systems, though some systems are marked experimental, so breadth does not mean every system is equally mature. A BIOS is required.

The project began as bsnes in 2004, became higan in 2012, and ares was created as a higan fork in 2020. Its source code is distributed under the ISC license. The native-style interface is built with hiro, using WinAPI on Windows, Cocoa on macOS, and GTK2 or GTK3 on POSIX systems.

Its scope puts it among multi-system emulators and game console emulators, with coverage relevant to SNES emulators as well.

Key features

Playback and display controls

Save states, rewind, run-ahead, and fast-forward give players several ways to manage a session, from returning to a saved point to changing playback timing. Pixel shaders and optional color correction can adjust the image and approximate characteristics of original displays. These controls are useful for users who want flexibility over presentation and play, though they do not remove the need to supply a BIOS.

Configurable input

Virtual Game-Pads let users configure controls once and adapt them to each emulated system. That is a practical advantage in a multi-system app, rather than maintaining separate control setups for every console.

Debugging

Simple features such as trace logging support development of original software for systems ares emulates. This adds a use beyond playing games, but the debugging tools are described as simple rather than a full development environment.

Pricing

ares is free: its open-source plan costs 0.00 USD per free and covers the emulator. There is no paid tier or trial to weigh against it. The trade-offs are practical rather than financial: users need a BIOS, Android is unsupported, and installation on Linux may require compiling from source or relying on third-party packages.

Platforms

ares supports Linux, macOS, and Windows, but platform requirements differ. Windows builds support Windows 7 or later; AMD64 binaries require at least an Intel Nehalem or AMD Jaguar CPU architecture. macOS binaries require Catalina 10.15 or later and are universal for Intel and Apple Silicon.

Linux users should expect a more involved route: the project prefers source compilation and links to third-party packages instead of providing official Linux binaries. That makes ares less convenient for anyone expecting a straightforward official installer. Android is not supported, so it is not a fit for users seeking a mobile emulator.

Who it's for

ares suits desktop users who value broad system coverage, open-source software, playback controls, and display customization in one emulator. Its trace logging also gives developers of original software a reason to consider it. It is less suitable for anyone who needs Android support, wants an official Linux binary, or is unwilling to handle a required BIOS.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with 34 console systems and arcade support for a wide-ranging desktop setup.
Pros: Save states, rewind, run-ahead, fast-forward, shaders, and color correction offer meaningful control over play and image presentation.
Pros: Virtual Game-Pads adapt a shared control configuration across emulated systems.
Cons: Some systems are experimental, so the breadth of the catalogue comes with uneven maturity.
Cons: A required BIOS adds a setup dependency.
Cons: Linux lacks official binaries, and Android is unsupported.

Alternatives

RetroArch is another free, open-source option with Android, iOS, web, and desktop platform support; choose it if those additional platforms matter. PPSSPP is a free PSP emulator across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows, making it the more focused choice for PSP emulation or mobile use.

Azahar is a free, open-source 3DS emulator for readers focused on that system. Dolphin is a free emulator for Android and desktop platforms, with GPLv2+ licensing. OpenEmu is free and open source but limited to macOS.

RPCS3 is a free, open-source emulator and debugger for desktop platforms. DuckStation is free on Android and desktop systems, but requires a user-provided BIOS image and legally purchased, dumped games. Snes9x is a free, portable SNES emulator for Android and desktop platforms that plays most SNES and Super Famicom games. Readers comparing related system-specific categories can also browse Game Gear emulators, Sega Master System emulators, and Sega Genesis emulators.

Verdict

Choose ares if you want a free, open-source desktop emulator with broad system coverage and useful playback and display controls. Its main advantage is combining that range with adaptable input; look elsewhere if you need Android, a more direct Linux installation, or an emulator without a BIOS requirement.
