Overview

ApplyKit brings the recurring work of a job search together: preparing tailored documents, organizing applications, and reviewing AI usage. Because profiles, generated files, application history, and provider credentials stay on infrastructure you control, it can suit applicants who prefer not to keep that information in a third-party service. That control comes with responsibility for deployment and protecting the installation.

It is free and open source under the MIT license, with no ApplyKit subscription required. The free plan uses your own hosted AI provider or local Ollama, so the software has no subscription price but AI access may depend on a provider you arrange.

Key features

Resume imports accept PDF, DOCX, or pasted text. From there, ATS-focused CV enhancement, live preview, and PDF export support a practical editing loop without requiring a separate resume-preparation tool. Tailored cover letters and Smart Apply workflows extend the same process to individual roles; the tracker, application history, and AI usage reporting help applicants keep materials and progress together.

Role Evidence Match separates evidence match, confidence, and eligibility rather than collapsing them into one score. When evidence is insufficient or inconsistent, it shows “Analysis needs review.” This is a useful prompt to check an application against the role, not a hiring forecast: it does not estimate the chance of passing an ATS or getting hired, and it does not make hiring decisions.

ApplyKit supports hosted AI providers as well as local Ollama models, which do not require an API key. Multiple provider credentials can be managed with manual selection, automatic failover, or round-robin routing. Automatic routing needs at least two enabled credentials, so a single credential cannot provide failover or rotation.

Pricing

Free, self-hosted: 0.00 USD per free. There is no ApplyKit subscription, but you use your own hosted AI provider or local Ollama. This suits technically comfortable applicants who want to avoid a software subscription and choose how AI is provided. There is no separate paid ApplyKit tier in this plan structure.

The price advantage does not remove the work of running the service. Docker installation is documented for Windows, macOS, Linux, Git Bash, and WSL, and the browser interface runs at localhost:3000. SQLite is the default database; Docker stores application data and the credential-encryption key in separate persistent volumes.

Platforms

ApplyKit supports Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and self-hosted deployment. Its documented Docker setup covers desktop operating systems and WSL, with a browser-based interface. This is a fit for users comfortable running a service, rather than someone looking for a conventional hosted app with separate user accounts.

Who it's for

Choose ApplyKit if you are managing an active job search, want resume and cover-letter drafting alongside application tracking, and value keeping records and provider credentials on infrastructure you control. It is less suitable for teams or shared installations: optional password authentication protects one installation with one owner password, not a multi-user account system. Applicants who do not want to manage hosting should consider a hosted alternative.

Pros and cons

Pros: Resume import, ATS-focused editing, cover letters, Smart Apply, tracking, and usage reporting are combined, which can keep a job search in one workspace.
Pros: Local Ollama support and self-hosting give users control over AI setup and where application data resides.
Pros: Role Evidence Match distinguishes confidence and eligibility and flags questionable evidence instead of presenting its guidance as a hiring prediction.
Cons: Self-hosting requires deployment and ongoing care, so the zero-subscription price is most attractive to users comfortable managing software.
Cons: One owner password prevents separate team accounts, limiting shared use.
Cons: ApplyKit does not currently provide encryption-key rotation or a rotation interface, a meaningful limitation for deployments that require that control.

Verdict

ApplyKit is a strong fit for an individual job seeker who wants AI-assisted application preparation and tracking without an ApplyKit subscription, especially if keeping data on personally controlled infrastructure matters. Its breadth and local-model option are compelling; look elsewhere if you need team accounts, encryption-key rotation, or a service that does not require you to operate its own installation.
