Overview

darktable is a free, open-source application for organizing and developing digital photographs, particularly raw files. It suits photographers who want to manage a library and shape images through a flexible desktop workflow. Its strongest case is breadth without a subscription; its steep learning curve makes it a less natural fit for anyone seeking a quick, guided editor.

It keeps digital negatives in a database and pairs that catalog with a zoomable lighttable for browsing. Development is non-destructive, leaving original files unchanged. Imports cover standard, raw, and high dynamic range formats including JPEG, CR2, NEF, HDR, PFM, and RAF, giving it room to handle mixed image collections.

It is worth comparing within RAW Photo Processing Software, Photo Editing Software, and Batch Photo Processing Software.

Key features

Development and color control

Masking and batch editing support selective work and repeated adjustments across groups of images. Automatic display-profile detection works on most systems, and built-in ICC profiles cover sRGB, Adobe RGB, XYZ, and linear RGB. Many image operations can use OpenCL GPU acceleration, which can help take advantage of compatible hardware without changing the non-destructive character of the workflow.

Capture, automation, and export

Tethered shooting with live view is supported for some camera brands, so suitability depends on the camera in use. Lua scripting reaches many parts of the application, a useful option for photographers who want to automate recurring tasks. Export routes include Piwigo webalbums, local disk, email attachments, and HTML-based web galleries; there is no cloud sync, so it is not a choice for a workflow that depends on built-in cross-device synchronization.

Optional AI

Opt-in AI features, disabled by default, support object masking, denoising, and upscaling. The Flatpak release omits those features as of September 2026, so Linux users choosing that package should not expect the AI tools to be included.

Pricing

darktable costs 0.00 USD per free. The free, GPL version 3 or later application includes its photography workflow and raw development tools, with no paid tier or trial to weigh against it. That makes it an accessible option for an individual workflow, though the cost does not remove the time investment required to learn the application.

Platforms

darktable runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Downloads include Windows installers and macOS disk images, while Linux and Unix users can choose source, AppImage, package manager, or Flatpak routes. The provided macOS bundles require macOS 13.5 (Ventura) or later. Windows builds are not signed with a trusted code-signing certificate, which can trigger SmartScreen or Smart App Control warnings.

For help, the project directs users to the Pixls.us forum; bug reports and feature requests go to GitHub Issues. Two compatibility limits matter when moving workflows: darktable does not support DCP camera profiles, and presets from other programs are incompatible.

Who it's for

darktable is best suited to photographers who want a database-backed library, raw development, masking, batch processing, and multiple export routes in one free desktop application, and who are willing to learn its controls. It is a weaker fit for users who need cloud synchronization, depend on DCP profiles or presets from another editor, or want AI features through the Flatpak release.

Pros and cons

Pro: Non-destructive editing preserves originals while supporting development of a broad mix of standard, raw, and HDR formats.
Pro: Masking, batch editing, scripting, and several export destinations give adaptable users options for both individual and repeated workflows.
Pro: The application is free across Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Con: Its steep learning curve asks more of newcomers than a straightforward image editor.
Con: No cloud sync means library continuity across devices needs another approach.
Con: DCP profiles and presets from other programs are unsupported, while Flatpak omits the optional AI features.
Con: Windows signing warnings and the macOS 13.5 minimum may add friction at installation.

Alternatives

RawTherapee is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows; choose it if digital asset management, printing, or uploading features are not needed.
vkdt is a free, open-source photography workflow toolbox for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Nikon NX Studio is a free desktop option for macOS and Windows, with Nikon camera and file format support that varies.
Hasselblad Phocus is free RAW file image-processing software for Mac and PC.
Canon Digital Photo Professional is a free option for macOS and Windows included in initial software setup for Canon cameras, including EOS digital cameras and PowerShot models with RAW capability.
Darkroom is a freemium macOS and iOS alternative with a free Starter plan and a 39.99 USD per year Yearly plan; Starter allows trying premium tools but requires Darkroom+ for export.

dcraw is a free alternative for Linux and Windows.

Verdict

Choose darktable if you want a free, non-destructive raw workflow that combines image organization, flexible development, batch tools, and multiple export paths. Its breadth makes it a strong fit for photographers willing to learn and manage their own workflow. Look elsewhere if cloud sync, DCP profiles, imported presets, or an easier learning curve matters more.
