Overview

Akumina brings employee news, communities, search, knowledge management, workflows, and AI into a personalized layer within the customer’s Microsoft 365 tenant. Its use of SharePoint, Entra ID, and Teams makes it a natural fit for organizations already built around Microsoft’s tools, while making it less compelling for buyers who want a platform independent of that environment.

Personalized home pages and targeted communications can reflect employees’ roles, locations, languages, and departments. That flexibility can help a global or multi-brand organization surface relevant information to different groups, but may be unnecessary overhead for a workforce with shared needs.

Key features

Communications and knowledge

Persona-based targeting, multilingual and multichannel delivery, and employee acknowledgments give communicators ways to tailor messages and record acknowledgment. These tools are most useful when different groups need different information. Semantic AI search reaches across Microsoft 365 and connected systems while respecting existing permissions, helping employees find material without bypassing established access rules.

Workflows and AI governance

No-code forms and process automation support HR, IT, Facilities, and Procurement workflows. That breadth can bring routine employee requests into the same experience as communications and knowledge, though organizations with simpler needs may not benefit from covering all four functions.

AI management includes prompt and persona governance, scoped knowledge grounding, agent routing, performance measurement, and cost visibility. These controls are relevant to enterprises that need oversight of AI use; they add less value to teams without those governance requirements.

Integrations, security, and mobile

Microsoft Graph connectors link Akumina to external systems, with ServiceNow and Workday among the examples. Akumina says it is SOC 2 Type II certified and GDPR compliant, and that it inherits Microsoft 365 controls such as Entra ID permissions and SharePoint data governance. It also offers custom native iOS and Android apps, useful for delivering content to employees on mobile devices.

Pricing

Akumina is paid software with custom pricing. Buyers need to contact the company for a quote, so it is less suited to teams that need to compare fixed per-user prices before engaging a vendor. Standard support runs Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET; enhanced and custom support are available by contacting Akumina.

Platforms

Akumina supports Android, iOS, web, API, and self-hosted deployments. The company offers deployment types through Akumina or its partners, including self-hosting support. Its Microsoft 365 tenant architecture is a significant part of the product’s fit, even with those deployment options.

Who it's for

Akumina is aimed at large organizations operating across regions, languages, brands, or regulatory environments, particularly those using Microsoft 365. Its targeting, workflows, and AI governance address enterprise complexity; a small organization with straightforward communication needs is unlikely to need the same breadth.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad employee experience in Microsoft 365: communications, search, knowledge, workflows, and AI share a tenant-based foundation.
Granular communication and personalization: targeting and home pages can adapt to role, region, language, and department.
Governance and permissions: AI oversight features and search that respects existing permissions suit regulated or complex environments.
Multiple delivery and deployment options: native mobile apps and self-hosting support give enterprises alternatives to web-only access.

Cons

Custom pricing: buyers cannot assess a fixed price without requesting a quote.
Enterprise orientation: the platform’s range is a poor match for smaller teams with simple intranet needs.
Microsoft 365 dependence: its architecture is most persuasive for organizations already invested in Microsoft 365.

Alternatives

Appspace Signage is worth considering when a free plan is the priority: it supports one compatible device, two Premium Users, up to two admins, 5GB of storage, and 5GB of monthly bandwidth. HumHub is the alternative to consider for an open-source, self-hosted community platform with module marketplace access and community support.

MangoApps may fit organizations seeking a paid communications and intranet suite, with pricing from 9.00 USD per month, billed from 200 employees. Blink offers a more focused Core plan at 4.50 USD per month, billed per user per month, with company branding, internal communications, real-time collaboration, and a knowledge hub.

Flip may suit organizations of up to 300 employees looking for a platform-only Growth plan at 4.95 EUR per year. Jalios Intranet is another paid intranet option, with a personalized offer based on product and employee count. Omnia is another paid option available on Android, iOS, web, and API. Axero may suit teams seeking workspaces, groups, communication tools, content management, notifications, task management, and gamification, with a free trial.

Verdict

Choose Akumina if your large organization runs on Microsoft 365 and needs employee communications, knowledge, workflows, and AI governance tailored to a complex workforce. Its breadth and tenant-level fit are the main reasons to choose it; custom pricing and its enterprise-specific approach are reasons to look elsewhere if you need a simpler or more price-transparent intranet.
