Overview

Prometheus stores measurements as time series, identified by a metric name and key-value labels. That model, paired with PromQL, gives teams a flexible way to query operational data without relying on SQL. Collection is adaptable: the server can scrape targets over HTTP, receive pushes through an intermediary gateway, or find targets through service discovery and static configuration.

The main server runs as a standalone monolithic binary with no external dependencies. Autonomous servers also avoid dependence on network storage or remote services, which can help preserve monitoring during outages. The trade-off is that Prometheus does not provide horizontal scaling. Teams expecting one deployment to scale out as demand grows should weigh that constraint early.

Key features

HTTP pull scraping is the central collection method, with Pushgateway, Remote Write, and OpenMetrics backfilling also supported. Client libraries, exporters, and Alertmanager extend the ecosystem; Grafana can provide visualization, and alerts can be sent through webhooks. This is a practical set of building blocks for a team willing to assemble a monitoring workflow rather than depend on a single bundled service.

PromQL is the query language, and SQL is not supported. Teams already organized around PromQL can work directly with the time-series model; those needing SQL-based analysis should consider another tool. Retention policies are supported, but horizontal scaling is not.

Prometheus and most exporters support TLS, including client certificate authentication, as well as HTTP Basic Authentication. The project advises against exposing component HTTP endpoints to publicly accessible networks without appropriate protective measures. Security also deserves ongoing attention: volunteers maintain the project, and fixes are handled on a best-effort basis, with an aim to release fixes within seven days for several core projects.

Pricing

Prometheus is free: its plan costs 0.00 USD per free and provides the open-source monitoring and alerting toolkit under the Apache 2.0 license. There is no paid tier or free trial. That makes it a straightforward option for teams able to operate it themselves, but the price does not include a promised commercial support arrangement. Community support comes through Slack, mailing lists, and a Discourse forum; independent commercial support providers are listed separately.

There are no seat or usage fees stated. The material operational limits are more consequential than a subscription cap: the server does not scale horizontally, and the project does not recommend Prometheus for workloads requiring 100% accurate data, including per-request billing.

Platforms

Prometheus supports Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and self-hosted use. Official components have precompiled binaries and Docker images, and the download page includes builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The self-hosted, standalone architecture suits teams that want direct control over deployment; it also means they are responsible for protecting endpoints and operating the service.

Who it's for

Prometheus is best for engineering and operations teams that need a free, self-managed metrics toolkit, value flexible collection and PromQL, and can work within a non-horizontally-scalable server architecture. Its autonomous operation is useful when dependence on remote services is undesirable, including during outages.

It is not a sound fit for per-request billing or other uses where every measurement must be 100% accurate. Teams that require SQL, horizontal scaling, or an integrated commercial support commitment should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free under the Apache 2.0 license, with no trial or subscription gate to adopting the toolkit.
Pros: Pull scraping, gateway-based pushes, service discovery, static configuration, Remote Write, and OpenMetrics backfilling give teams several ways to collect metrics.
Pros: The standalone server has no external dependencies, and autonomous servers do not rely on network storage or remote services.
Cons: No horizontal scaling makes it a weaker fit for deployments that need to scale out.
Cons: The stated accuracy limitation rules it out for per-request billing and other workloads that demand 100% accurate data.
Cons: SQL is not supported, and volunteer maintenance with best-effort security fixes may not suit teams seeking a formal support commitment.

Alternatives

Netdata is worth considering for teams that want a freemium option with a free trial and support across mobile as well as desktop and self-hosted platforms. Its free Community plan caps active connected nodes at five and custom dashboards at one per room.

Checkmk may suit teams that prioritize pre-built integrations and host monitoring: its free Community plan includes 2,000+ integrations, supports up to about 100 hosts, and provides community support.

Zabbix is another freemium monitoring option with a free trial; its Silver plan is described with 8x5 support, a one-day response, and one support contact.

VictoriaMetrics is a relevant alternative for teams comparing open-source time-series monitoring, with both single-node and cluster versions available as open source.

InfluxDB is worth comparing if a single-node option or usage-based cloud ingestion better suits the deployment; its Cloud Serverless Data In plan is pay-for-what-you-use.

Azure Monitor may fit teams seeking a paid monitoring service with a free plan; its Pay-As-You-Go pricing varies by feature and region and charges for ingested data and other billable usage.

Icinga offers a free, open-source edition with unlimited hosts and services, making it a candidate when those stated monitoring limits matter more than Prometheus's metrics model.

LogicMonitor is a paid alternative with a free trial and an Essentials plan priced from 16.00 USD per month per hybrid unit, subject to standard minimum quantities and terms.

Verdict

Choose Prometheus if your team wants a free, self-managed metrics and alerting toolkit with flexible collection, PromQL, and a server that operates independently of remote services. Its main reasons to look elsewhere are equally clear: it does not scale horizontally, does not support SQL, and is not recommended where metrics must be perfectly accurate.
