Overview

Edgegap combines matchmaking, a server browser, game-server hosting and orchestration on public edge infrastructure. Its regionless hosting caches and launches servers on demand across more than 615 locations without requiring an SDK. The orchestrator places deployments on an available server, and Edgegap says this can reduce player latency by up to 58%; studios should treat that as a potential benefit rather than a guaranteed outcome.

Hybrid orchestration can deploy to a Private Fleet alongside Edge Cloud. That lets teams pair on-demand public capacity with persistent private infrastructure instead of forcing all workloads into one hosting model. The company was founded in October 2018 and is based in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.

Key features

Automated matchmaking and a server browser run on fully managed clusters. The engine integrations include Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot plugins for containerizing and deploying game servers. Service integrations include Unity Gaming Services matchmaking, Heroic Labs Nakama, PlayFab and Epic Online Services Lobbies, while networking integrations cover Mirror, Unity Netcode for GameObjects, Fish Networking, Photon Fusion 2, PurrNet and Netfox. This breadth is useful for teams working with those ecosystems, though it does not remove the need to configure their game-server containers and networking stack.

Edgegap lists instant DDoS protection, and says DDoS protection is among the capabilities unlocked by adding a credit card. Its team supports live games 24/7, with community support and a documentation-trained AI chatbot also offered. Enterprise services add a dedicated 24/7 team with guaranteed response times and an uptime SLA, a more appropriate support arrangement for studios with firm operational requirements.

Edge Cloud containers can run for up to 24 consecutive hours. Teams that need longer-running containers are directed to Private Fleets. Distributed Relays support peer-to-peer networking, but provide no compute and cannot act as authoritative game servers; they are not a substitute for hosting game logic.

Pricing

Edgegap's pricing ranges from short trials to usage-based hosting and dedicated environments. The free options are trials rather than an ongoing free plan, so they are useful for evaluation but not a permanent zero-cost production tier.

Plan	Price and billing	What it includes
Matchmaking & Server Browser — Free Trial	0.00 USD per free; billed Free trial	Shared environment, all features with limited resources, time-limited to 3 hours.
Game Server Hosting — Free Trial	0.00 USD per free; no credit card	1 app, 2 versions, 1.5 vCPU, usage caps, 1 concurrent deployment and a 60-minute uptime cap per deployment.
Distributed Relays — Free Trial	0.00 USD per free	Up to 50 CCU and 160 GB egress included; no compute.
Edge Cloud	0.00 USD per month; per vCPU per minute, billed by the minute on usage	0 active servers = $0; $0.10/GB monthly egress; 0.25–4 vCPU per deployment; 615+ locations; no commitment.
Private Fleet (Bare Metal)	0.03 USD per month; per vCPU per hour, billed monthly and always on	$280 per host/month (12-month rate) or $350 monthly; 58 locations; egress included (6 TB per host/month); 16 vCPU per host (15 usable); persistent 24/7 capacity.
Matchmaking & Server Browser — Hobbyist	0.03 USD per month; $0.0312/hour, estimated $22/month at 24h/30d usage	Dedicated environment, 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM.
Matchmaking & Server Browser — Studio	0.15 USD per month; $0.146/hour, estimated $105/month at 24h/30d usage	6 vCPU and 12 GB RAM.
Matchmaking & Server Browser — Enterprise	0.55 USD per month; $0.548/hour, estimated $395/month at 24h/30d usage	18 vCPU and 48 GB RAM; intended for high traffic.
Distributed Relays — 100 CCU	8.00 USD per month; monthly	100 CCU and 325 GB egress included.
Distributed Relays — 500 CCU	115.00 USD per month; monthly	500 CCU and 1,625 GB egress included.

Edge Cloud is the clearest fit for variable demand: idle active-server usage costs $0, but egress is charged separately and each deployment is limited to 0.25–4 vCPU. It does not suit containers that must remain up beyond 24 consecutive hours. A Private Fleet provides persistent capacity and included egress, but its always-on monthly billing makes it less suitable for workloads that need only occasional compute; the $280 per host/month rate requires a 12-month term, while the monthly option is $350.

The matchmaking trial lasts just three hours on a shared environment. Hobbyist, Studio and Enterprise move to dedicated environments with 1, 6 and 18 vCPU respectively; the larger plans fit higher traffic but bring higher continuous-use estimates. The relay trial and paid tiers provide connection capacity and egress, not game-server compute. No ongoing free plan is offered, so teams should budget for paid usage after trials.

Platforms

Edgegap supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows and web, as well as API access. That range suits multiplayer projects spanning mobile, desktop and browser-based games, including the mobile, VR, extended-reality and WebGL/HTML use cases it targets.

Who it's for

Edgegap is a strong candidate for game studios and developers who need managed matchmaking and geographically distributed server deployment, particularly when latency and variable demand matter. Teams already using its listed engine, service or networking integrations can connect familiar tooling to the hosting workflow. It is less suitable for developers seeking a lasting free tier, teams requiring Edge Cloud containers to run continuously beyond 24 hours, or projects that expect relays to host authoritative game logic. Private Fleets are the route for persistent capacity, at the cost of always-on billing.

Pros and cons

Pros: On-demand deployments across more than 615 locations can help serve geographically spread players without an SDK requirement.
Pros: Matchmaking, server browsing, hosting and hybrid orchestration bring several multiplayer infrastructure needs into one service.
Pros: A broad set of engine, service and networking integrations can suit teams built around Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot and the named multiplayer frameworks.
Cons: Edge Cloud containers are capped at 24 consecutive hours, so longer-running workloads need Private Fleets.
Cons: Relays include no compute and cannot serve as authoritative game servers, limiting them to peer-to-peer networking needs.
Cons: There is no ongoing free plan; the trials have tight time, usage or concurrency limits, and Private Fleet capacity is always billed.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Game Matchmaking Software and Game Backend Services.

Consider Metaplay if a freemium option with local development, a full SDK and a local server better matches your starting point. brainCloud is another freemium alternative with a free development tier. Choose Photon Realtime if its free development tier of 20 concurrent users and 60.0 GB monthly traffic suits a development-only project. GS2-Matchmaking may suit eligible individuals or corporations with sales under 10 million yen in the past 12 months. AccelByte Gaming Services offers free public-cloud foundations while building, with usage fees as players arrive. Colyseus is worth considering if self-hosting open-source software on your own servers is preferable. SmartFoxServer is another freemium option. Epic Online Services is free to use with no royalty or hosting fees, with service usage restrictions potentially applying.

Verdict

Choose Edgegap if your multiplayer game needs managed matchmaking and server placement across many locations, with the option to shift persistent workloads to a Private Fleet. Its strongest case is the combination of regional reach, integrations and flexible orchestration; look elsewhere if you need a permanent free plan, uncapped Edge Cloud runtime or relays that can host authoritative servers.
