Overview

Payroll is the strongest common thread: every package includes real-time processing, tax filing and payment services, and payroll reporting. Employee records, onboarding, time-off management and performance management extend the system beyond payroll. That breadth can simplify shared HR workflows, but employers should match their needs to package boundaries before choosing it.

Employee self-service covers HR answers, expected pay, time-off requests and other tasks. Administrators can customize and share reports, comparing teams, departments and timelines. Secure cloud storage and role-based security help control access to employee records; integrations connect the platform with business tools, payroll systems and carriers.

Key features

Payroll and employee workflows

Digital I-9 processing, electronic signatures, reminders and employee payment preferences are part of onboarding. These tools give HR teams a structured way to collect new-hire information and move setup tasks along. Purpose-built AI offers recommendations, helps resolve payroll issues and supports HR workflows, though organizations should weigh those capabilities alongside the package features they actually need.

Benefits and workforce management

Benefits administration begins with Plus; Workforce Management is included in Premium, with scheduling, time collection and time-off tools. Premium is the tier to consider when those scheduling and attendance functions are central. Plus is the lower step for employers seeking benefits administration without moving to that workforce-management package.

Mobile, integrations and service

Mobile capabilities include benefits enrollment, career sites and C-suite insights. The platform also supports payroll and carrier integrations, and ADP provides client service specialists and ongoing optimization services as organizations change or grow. Its employee-size positioning spans organizations with 50–999 and 1,000 or more employees, so smaller employers may find it broader in scope than they need.

Pricing

ADP Workforce Now uses paid, custom pricing, with no free plan. Select is the all-in-one payroll and HR suite; Plus adds benefits administration; Premium includes Plus and time and attendance. The package progression is clear, but employers need a quote to compare costs and should confirm whether the specific capabilities they want are included. No free trial or refund policy is stated.

Select: Payroll and HR suite. Consider it for organizations that need the shared payroll and HR foundation without the benefits or workforce-management additions.
Plus: Select plus benefits administration. It fits employers that want benefits alongside payroll and HR but do not require Premium’s workforce-management package.
Premium: Plus with time and attendance. It is the package to assess when scheduling and time collection are needed as part of workforce management.

Platforms

ADP Workforce Now is available on the web, iOS and Android. Mobile apps support benefits enrollment, career sites and C-suite insights; the platform also includes mobile self-service for employees.

Who it's for

This is a sensible candidate for organizations with 50 or more employees that want payroll and HR in one platform, particularly those that can benefit from benefits administration or workforce management at higher tiers. It is less compelling for employers seeking a free entry point or a narrowly focused tool, and the custom quote means buyers must establish package fit and cost before comparing it with alternatives.

Pros and cons

Pros: All packages include real-time payroll processing, tax filing and payment services, and reporting, giving organizations a consistent payroll foundation across tiers.
Pros: Employee self-service, onboarding workflows and customizable reports cover several routine HR tasks in the same platform.
Pros: Plus and Premium add a defined progression from benefits administration to workforce management with scheduling and time collection.
Cons: Pricing is custom and there is no free plan, so employers cannot evaluate cost from a public entry price.
Cons: Benefits and workforce management are tier-dependent; buyers needing either should confirm package coverage before committing.

Alternatives

For recruiting-focused needs, consider Zoho Recruit: its free plan permits one active job, with paid Standard and Enterprise tiers allowing 10 and 20 active jobs per recruiter license, respectively. It is a more relevant choice for teams prioritizing applicant tracking than ADP’s payroll and HR breadth.

Korn Ferry Assess is another paid option with pricing on request and no public plan limits stated.

SmartRecruiters offers an Essential plan starting at $14,995.00 USD per month, with applicant tracking, CRM, onboarding, SMS messaging, job distribution and dynamic scheduling; choose it when that recruiting feature set is the priority.

Datapeople is a paid alternative with Comply and Attract plans; consider it for a separate option in this category.

HRBlade offers a paid Standard plan at $159.00 USD per month for under 50 employees, five active job openings, one user seat and 50 interviews per month, plus a free trial. It is worth considering for smaller recruiting teams whose needs fit those caps rather than a broader payroll-and-HR platform.

Paycor is a paid payroll and HR alternative with Basic, Essential and Complete plans for organizations under 50 employees, as well as an HCM plan.

Salary.com CompXL uses paid pricing that requires a personalized demo, with no public price stated.

Workable has a free plan and monthly Standard and Premier pricing; its Standard plan costs $299.00 USD per month for 1–20 employees with unlimited active jobs. It is a recruiting-oriented alternative for smaller teams that value that free entry point and job-posting allowance.

Verdict

Choose ADP Workforce Now if your organization wants payroll and core HR in one system and can justify a custom-priced package, especially when benefits or workforce management belong in the same workflow. Its main advantage is a shared payroll foundation with tiered HR capabilities; look elsewhere if you need transparent pricing, a free plan or a focused recruiting product.
