Overview

Asana is a work-management app for organizing tasks and projects across several views. It suits teams that need flexible ways to follow work, while its free Personal plan is narrowly sized for one or two people. The range from that small-team option to organization-focused security plans is useful, though the limits on the entry tier and the jump to paid pricing matter.

Founded in 2008 and headquartered in San Francisco, Asana offers automation rules, time tracking, guest access, and 200 native integrations. Its work can be viewed as lists, boards, calendars, timelines, or Gantt charts, making it relevant to Project Management Software, Task Management Software, and Work Management Software.

Key features

Views, automation, and tracking

List and board views support different ways of arranging tasks; calendar, timeline, and Gantt views add ways to see work against a schedule. That range can serve teams with varied project-planning needs, although the available plan descriptions do not say which tiers include each view.

Integrations, storage, and guests

Personal includes more than 100 free integrations, compared with 200 native integrations across the product. Its storage is unlimited overall, but each file is capped at 100 MB—a practical constraint for teams sharing large assets. Guest access is available, which may help when work involves people outside the core team.

Organization controls

Advanced adds granular access policies across teams and contractors. Enterprise includes SAML authentication and SCIM user provisioning, while Enterprise+ adds SIEM integration, data residency, audit logs, and dedicated workspaces. These are meaningful distinctions for organizations with access-management or oversight needs; smaller groups may not need the higher tiers.

Pricing

Personal and Starter

Personal is free forever for up to two users, with unlimited storage subject to the 100 MB per-file cap and more than 100 free integrations. It is a sensible starting point for one or two people managing personal projects, but not for a larger team. Starter costs $10.99 per user per month when billed annually, or $13.49 billed monthly. It allows unlimited users and includes 50K AI Studio credits per billing account per month. The annual rate lowers the monthly price, but requires annual billing.

Advanced and Enterprise tiers

Advanced costs $24.99 per month when billed annually, or $30.49 billed monthly, and includes 75K AI Studio credits per billing account per month. Its access policies make it more relevant to teams managing permissions across groups and contractors. Enterprise uses custom pricing and includes up to 250 AI requests per account per month and 200K AI Studio credits per billing account per month, alongside SAML authentication and SCIM provisioning. Enterprise+ has custom pricing; its stated distinctions are SIEM integration, data residency, audit logs, and dedicated workspaces. These upper tiers are aimed at organizations that need stronger identity, access, or compliance controls, rather than buyers seeking the lowest-cost task tracker.

Platforms

Asana has apps for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows, so it supports both mobile and desktop use across those platforms.

Who it's for

Asana is a good fit for teams that value multiple project views and need a path from small-scale coordination to organization-level controls. Personal works for up to two people; Starter removes the user cap, while Advanced and Enterprise tiers address more involved access and identity requirements. Look elsewhere if a free workspace must support more than two users or if large individual files are central to the work.

Pros and cons

Several useful project views: List, board, calendar, timeline, and Gantt options accommodate different ways of planning and following tasks.
Room to scale: Plans progress from a two-user free tier to custom-priced enterprise options with identity and security controls.
Broad integration reach: The product lists 200 native integrations, and Personal includes more than 100 free integrations.
Small free-plan ceiling: Personal supports only two users, so a growing team must move to a paid tier.
File-size cap on Personal: Unlimited storage does not remove the 100 MB maximum per file.
Monthly billing costs more: Starter rises from $10.99 to $13.49 per user per month, and Advanced from $24.99 to $30.49 per month, when billed monthly rather than annually.

Alternatives

Choose ClickUp if a free plan with unlimited members and tasks matters more than Asana’s broader stated integration count; its free tier has 60MB of storage and one form. Linear is worth considering for a free workspace with unlimited members, two teams, and a 250-issue cap. Wrike offers unlimited free users but limits the free tier to 200 active tasks and 2 GB of account storage. YouTrack suits a reader seeking a free plan for up to 10 users with 30 GB of storage. Teamwork.com has a free tier capped at five projects and five users, with 100 automations. monday.com is another two-seat free option, capped at three boards, 200 items, and 500 MB of storage. OpenProject offers a free Community plan with no minimum users and community support. Plane has a free plan for 12 users.

Verdict

Choose Asana if your team wants several ways to organize and schedule work, plus a clear route to more advanced access and identity controls as it grows. Its free plan is genuinely limited to a pair, and Personal’s per-file ceiling may rule it out for large assets. Teams that need a larger free member allowance should compare alternatives before committing.
