Overview

CloseZero is AI accounting software for scaling startups that need bookkeeping across entities and currencies. It is best suited to founders who want current financial reporting and controlled investor access alongside transaction processing. The central trade-off is a generous qualifying free plan against unfinished export and regional compliance workflows.

Key features

CloseZero categorizes transactions, matches them with supporting documents, and reconciles them against bank-statement lines for review. Receipt and supplier-invoice capture extracts vendor, amount, date, and tax details, then links the original file to the entry. That pairing can reduce routine bookkeeping while preserving evidence, but AI-generated work still needs human review.

A shared ledger spans entities and currencies, with P&L, balance sheet, cash, burn, and runway figures updating as entries arrive. This suits teams that want financial visibility during the month, with a stated aim of closing by month-end. Stripe connects through a restricted key; Brex, Wise, Revolut, and HSBC are also shown, and bank statements can be imported by CSV or PDF.

Investor rooms allow read-only access scoped to entities and periods, or a point-in-time PDF pack; access can be revoked. Accountants can work in the same ledger and auditors can receive read-only seats. This is a collaboration layer for professional oversight, not a substitute for an accountant or auditor.

Regional support is mixed. CloseZero describes US GAAP consolidation, Hong Kong audit support, and Swiss VAT and QR-bill invoicing, while Germany and China capabilities are labeled beta. German DATEV export and statutory report layouts remain on the roadmap; Chinese local CAS books, domestic archiving, and Golden Tax fapiao workflows stay with the customer's accounting process. Teams dependent on those local workflows should not treat CloseZero as a complete compliance system.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, with no time limit or card requirement, for startups below $10,000 MRR or $100,000 raised. It includes AI bookkeeping, Stripe and bank statements, invoicing, multi-entity and multi-currency consolidation, live reports, and investor rooms with PDF packs. It is a substantial starting point for qualifying startups, but the threshold makes it unsuitable as a permanent no-cost option once a business grows beyond either limit.

Growth has custom pricing: the rate is not set yet, is flat per entity per month, and is disclosed before anything is owed. It includes everything in Free plus unlimited investor rooms, auditor access, intercompany handling at scale, multi-GAAP mapping, and verified metrics, though some features are not yet built. It is the tier to consider when collaboration or multi-GAAP needs exceed Free, but the unfinalized price and unfinished features warrant confirming scope before committing.

Scale also has custom pricing, based on entities, volume, and desired support. It adds an audit-firm workspace, REST API and OAuth apps, ERP-grade exports, SOC 2-backed enterprise sharing, and priority support; some features are not yet live. This is aimed at larger or more demanding operations, but it is not a fit for buyers who need every listed capability immediately.

Accountants, auditors, and investors do not pay on any plan. Documents are downloadable and a read API is available, but one-click export of the full ledger is still to be built, a material limitation for businesses that need a portable complete accounting record. The privacy policy says data is used to provide CloseZero, not sold or used for advertising, and access is limited by user roles; the policy remains a draft intended for finalization with counsel before launch.

Platforms

CloseZero is offered on web and through an API. The combination favors browser-based startup finance teams and integrations, rather than users seeking a mobile app.

Who it's for

CloseZero makes most sense for a qualifying startup managing multiple entities or currencies, seeking AI-assisted bookkeeping and live reporting, and sharing controlled views with investors or auditors. It is a weaker choice for businesses needing a complete one-click ledger export, finished German statutory workflows, or CloseZero-managed local Chinese accounting processes.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free plan has no time limit or card requirement below its stated revenue or funding caps, and includes consolidation and live financial reports.
Pros: Entries can stay connected to receipts and invoices, while transaction categorization and reconciliation reduce routine manual work subject to review.
Pros: Revocable, read-only investor access and auditor seats support sharing without giving collaborators ledger-editing access.
Cons: The full ledger cannot yet be exported in one step, limiting straightforward portability.
Cons: German statutory layouts and DATEV export are unfinished, and several China-specific accounting duties remain outside the product.
Cons: Growth and Scale have custom pricing, and some features in both plans are not yet built or live.

Alternatives

Choose Docyt if Android or iOS access matters; it also offers a free Accountant Copilot plan with AI categorization and bank and card reconciliation. AccelClose is worth considering when a clearly defined free allowance is preferable: its free plan covers up to 100 records and one entity, with manual journal entries and Excel/CSV export, but no AI autofill or live ERP sync.

FINSYNC may suit a reader focused on funding readiness and connections to banks, CDFIs, and investors through its free Funding Navigator. Choose WISO Business for a free invoicing-focused option with receipt scanning and a digital archive across Android, iOS, and web. Arvexi is another paid API and web alternative.

Concourse is a freemium web alternative. Finlens offers a $49.00 USD per month AI Accounting plan for up to $100k/month expenses and three bank accounts, with unlimited users; consider it if those stated limits fit better than CloseZero's entity-based custom tiers. Bearbook is a paid option with a free trial and a Premium plan at 5000.00 USD per year, including GST filing and financial statements.

Verdict

CloseZero is a strong fit for a qualifying startup that needs one multi-entity ledger, AI-assisted bookkeeping, live financial visibility, and carefully scoped investor access. Its no-time-limit free tier makes it easy to start, but buyers should look elsewhere if full-ledger portability or complete local compliance workflows are essential, and should verify custom-plan pricing and feature readiness before scaling up.
