Overview

5KPlayer is a free media player with playback, downloads, radio, library, and wireless-sharing features. It is best suited to people who want one player for varied media and a mix of home devices. Its breadth is useful, but its listed desktop support is limited to Windows and macOS.

Key features

Playback spans video, audio, DVD, IPTV, HDR, HEVC, AV1, and VR 360° content, with support for formats including MP4, MKV, MOV, WMV, FLV, AVI, MPEG, MTS, M2TS, VOB, WebM, MP3, AAC, FLAC, and APE. Subtitle support, hardware acceleration, and 4K playback strengthen its appeal for a varied personal media library.

Network playback extends beyond files stored locally, while downloads from more than 300 video and audio hosting sites, internet radio, and library features add useful range. That combination makes 5KPlayer more than a basic file player, though people who only need playback may not benefit from the extra features.

AirPlay and DLNA provide wireless streaming, mirroring, and multi-screen sharing. DLNA-certified devices can access the media library, and integrations include Android, PC and Mac, smart TVs, PlayStation, and Xbox. This suits a mixed-device home, but those seeking encryption or team and administrator controls should look elsewhere.

Pricing

The Free 5KPlayer plan costs nothing and requires no subscription. The media player, streaming, downloading, radio, and library features are presented as free, so it suits personal use without recurring software costs. No trial or refund policy is stated.

Platforms

5KPlayer supports Windows and macOS. Although it integrates with Android devices, smart TVs, PlayStation, Xbox, and DLNA devices, those integrations do not change its supported platform list. iOS appears among the platform tags, but the supported-platform entry names only Windows and macOS.

Who it's for

Choose 5KPlayer if you want a no-subscription player that combines broad media playback with downloads and wireless sharing across devices at home. It is less suitable if you require encryption, team administration, or a player for a platform beyond Windows and macOS.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad support for video, audio, DVD, IPTV, HDR, HEVC, AV1, and VR 360° content makes it useful for varied libraries.
Pros: 4K playback, hardware acceleration, and subtitle support serve common playback needs without a subscription.
Pros: Downloads from more than 300 hosting sites and AirPlay and DLNA sharing add functions beyond local playback.
Cons: Supported platforms are Windows and macOS, limiting its reach for users looking for a dedicated mobile or Linux player.
Cons: Encryption and team or administrator controls are not part of its stated feature set, ruling it out for those requirements.

Alternatives

For a free, open-source command-line player with wide media-format, codec, and subtitle support across Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows, consider mpv. Infuse is a better fit for iOS and macOS users who want additional video formats and high-resolution Dolby and DTS-HD audio through its Pro plan, priced at 1.99 USD per month with a free 7-day trial and cancellation anytime.

reEmbed is another option, with a free player and no stated plan price or limits. SMPlayer is a free, GPL-licensed media player for Linux, macOS, and Windows; MPlayer is a free option for the same desktop platforms under GNU General Public License version 2.

For video playback up to 4K, playlists, a media library, and DLNA casting on macOS or Windows, DivX Player offers a free plan. KMPlayer is a freemium choice across Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows, with PC options described as free.

Verdict

5KPlayer is a sound choice for Windows and macOS users who want broad playback plus downloads, radio, library access, and wireless sharing at no subscription cost. Its main drawback is the gap for anyone who needs encryption, team controls, or support beyond its named desktop platforms.
