What VyOS is

VyOS is an open-source networking operating system for bare-metal, virtualized, cloud, and edge deployments. It supports routing protocols including BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, RIP, MPLS, EVPN, and segment routing, along with VPN and tunnel options such as IPsec, WireGuard, OpenVPN, VXLAN, GRE, and others. Stateful and zone-based IPv4/IPv6 firewalls include source and destination NAT. Automation can use REST or GraphQL APIs, tools such as Ansible and Terraform, and Shell or Python. VyOS lists integrations with KVM, Hyper-V, VMware, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, OpenStack, and Dell NativeEdge. The rolling release and VyOS Stream are free; the rolling release is intended for labs, evaluation, and non-critical use, while Stream is a technology preview. LTS images are available to subscribers, contributors, and VyOS for Good members, and each major LTS release receives three years of support. Paid subscriptions provide access to VyOS network engineers. The project began in 2013.

Good

  • Free rolling release and VyOS Stream
  • Broad routing protocol and tunnel support
  • REST and GraphQL APIs
  • Plain-text configurations support review and auditing

Watch out

  • Rolling release is intended for non-critical use
  • Stream is a technology preview
  • LTS images require qualifying access

Who it suits

VyOS suits teams that need configurable routing, VPN, firewall, and NAT capabilities across bare-metal, virtualized, cloud, or edge systems. Its Alliance subscription is aimed at IT service providers, including managed service providers and system integrators.

Verdict

VyOS combines routing, firewalling, VPN, and automation options in a deployable networking OS. The free releases have stated use limits, while LTS access and support depend on eligibility or subscriptions.
