What Readability.ch is

Readability.ch is a free web tool that analyzes text with the Flesch formula and other readability indexes. Its English version reports Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Gunning Fog, SMOG, and LIX Readability Index. It also counts words, sentences, syllables, and unique words, and calculates words per sentence and syllables per word. Sentence coloring marks text as easy, medium, or hard to read.

The site is available in German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Dutch. Its makers say calculations happen in the browser and that text is not sent to or stored on a server. Analysis can work offline after the page has loaded once. Text can be passed in a URL with the text query parameter, and short texts can be linked directly. The site recommends at least 30 words for more reliable results. Its makers caution that the indexes do not account for content or context, do not specifically evaluate technical terms, and cannot replace human editing. The tool is described as useful for editors, copywriters, and translators; the project is by Christian Bachmann and Roger Gösele.
