Munki
Munki is a free set of tools for macOS administrators to manage software installations and, in many cases, removals on Mac client machines.
What Munki is
Munki is a free set of tools for macOS administrators to manage software installations and, in many cases, removals on Mac client machines. It uses a webserver-based repository to hold packages and package metadata, and can install Apple package files and software distributed as drag-and-drop disk images. Munki can install many Apple Software Updates on Intel Macs and prompt users to install pending Apple updates on both Intel and Apple silicon Macs. On clients, Managed Software Center notifies users about updates, displays installation progress and offers optional software to install or remove. Administrator tools import packages, create metadata and catalogs, and manipulate manifest files. The repository server can run on macOS, Linux, Windows or a NAS appliance, and the repository may be hosted in the cloud. However, the machine used to administer a Munki server must run macOS with Munki admin tools installed, and every managed client needs Munki tools. The project says organizations use Munki to manage software for tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of Macs. Only the current or latest version is actively supported.

Who it suits
Munki suits macOS administrators managing software across Mac client machines, including organizations with large Mac fleets. The server administrator’s machine must run macOS.
Verdict
Munki provides package, update and optional software management tools for macOS fleets at no cost. Administrators should account for its macOS admin-machine requirement and client-side tool installation.
