Mediator
Mediator is a cross-platform desktop GUI proxy for debugging gRPC traffic, available for Linux, macOS and Windows.
What Mediator is
Mediator is a cross-platform desktop GUI proxy for debugging gRPC traffic, available for Linux, macOS and Windows. Developers can use it to redirect requests to beta or test servers without changing client code. When an API schema is available, Mediator parses gRPC requests and responses and can present binary messages as a JSON tree. It accepts schemas through gRPC server reflection, proto source roots compiled with protoc, or FileDescriptorSet files.
For matching server rules, the app can decode gRPC and HTTPS requests after the client installs the root certificate generated by that Mediator installation. Certificates are available in DER and PEM formats; clients configured for another installation need its certificate installed separately. The proxy listens on port 8888 by default. The project lists Windows MSI, macOS DMG, Apple Silicon macOS DMG and Linux deb downloads, along with setup examples for Java, Objective-C/iOS and Go clients. Mediator is free and open source under Apache-2.0.
Good
- Redirects requests without changing client code
- Displays decoded messages as a JSON tree when a schema is available
- Supports reflection, proto roots and FileDescriptorSet schemas
- Available for Linux, macOS and Windows
Watch out
- HTTPS inspection requires installing its root certificate
- A different installation requires its own certificate
- Some message parsing requires an API schema
Who it suits
Mediator suits developers who need to inspect gRPC traffic or redirect a client to a beta or test server. It supports developers configuring Java, Objective-C/iOS and Go clients.
Verdict
Mediator provides schema-aware gRPC inspection and request redirection in a free desktop proxy. Certificate setup and schema availability are important considerations for decoding traffic.
