Kruise Rollouts
Kruise Rollouts is an open-source Kubernetes tool for progressive delivery.
What Kruise Rollouts is
Kruise Rollouts is an open-source Kubernetes tool for progressive delivery. It supports canary, blue-green, multi-batch, and A/B testing modes, with weighted traffic shifting and end-to-end canary deployment. Multi-batch updates cover Deployment, CloneSet, StatefulSet, Advanced StatefulSet, Advanced DaemonSet, and DaemonSet workloads. Canary updates apply to Deployment, while blue-green updates apply to Deployment and CloneSet. HTTP-header and cookie-based tests are supported. Documented ingress integrations include NGINX, ALB, and Higress, while service-mesh integration uses Gateway API. Pluggable Lua scripts can extend traffic handling to other Kubernetes protocols, including custom resources. Kruise Rollouts can enhance new or existing workload objects as a bypass component without replacing controllers or migrating workloads or pods, and it is compatible with Horizontal Pod Autoscaler. Installation requires Kubernetes 1.19 or later; Helm installation requires Helm 3.1 or later. The project uses Apache License 2.0 and is self-hosted.
Good
- Supports canary and blue-green releases
- Offers weighted traffic shifting
- Integrates with NGINX, ALB, and Higress
- Works with Horizontal Pod Autoscaler
- Apache License 2.0
Watch out
- Requires Kubernetes 1.19 or later
- Helm installation requires version 3.1 or later
- Blue-green uses double resources
- Provides no direct rollback
Who it suits
Kruise Rollouts suits Kubernetes teams implementing progressive delivery with multiple rollout strategies and traffic controls. It is intended for self-hosted clusters that meet its Kubernetes and Helm requirements.
Verdict
Kruise Rollouts adds several progressive delivery strategies to existing Kubernetes workloads without replacing their controllers. Teams should account for its cluster requirements, blue-green resource cost, and rollback approach.
