What GovInfo is
GovInfo is a free service providing public access to official publications from all three branches of the U.S. Federal Government. Readers can search using publication metadata and browse by A to Z, category, date, committee, or author. Its API gives programmatic access to content and metadata, and selected collections are available as machine-readable bulk data, including XML. GPO applies digital signatures and a visible authenticity seal to PDF documents so readers can verify their source and integrity in Adobe Acrobat or Reader. GovInfo's preservation repository maintains archival copies in separate locations and uses backups, a standby recovery instance, virus scanning, and file fixity checks. The site also supports case law, statute and regulation, and legal commentary searches, including opinions from more than 100 U.S. courts. It adapts to mobile devices without requiring a separate app or mobile URL. One limitation is that full text is available only for publications stored on GovInfo; records for items not stored there are not shown.
