Garble
Garble is a free command-line tool that wraps the Go toolchain to obfuscate builds while aiming to preserve their behavior.
What Garble is
Garble is a free command-line tool that wraps the Go toolchain to obfuscate builds while aiming to preserve their behavior. It supports `garble build`, `garble test`, and `garble run`, as well as commands for reversing obfuscated text and filing bug reports. Garble replaces identifiers and package paths with short base64 hashes, and removes build, module, and debug information. The optional `-literals` flag changes eligible literal expressions into more complex expressions with the same runtime value. The optional `-tiny` flag removes additional binary information and can make binaries about 15% smaller, but it also removes panic output, which can make crashes harder to debug. Builds are deterministic with the same inputs, and stack traces can be de-obfuscated when the necessary inputs are available. A Garble build should take about twice as long as `go build`, since it performs both an original and obfuscated build. It requires Go 1.27 or later. Exported methods and Go plugins are not currently supported for obfuscation, and some runtime APIs will not work in obfuscated binaries.
Good
- Free Go build obfuscation tool.
- Supports build, test, and run commands.
- Deterministic builds with the same inputs.
- Optional tiny mode can reduce binaries about 15%.
Watch out
- Requires Go 1.27 or later.
- Builds should take about twice as long as go build.
- Exported methods and Go plugins are not obfuscated.
- Tiny mode removes panic output.
Who it suits
Garble suits Go developers sharing binaries whose source is private or requires purchase and who want to discourage reverse engineering. It is intended for command-line build workflows.
Verdict
Garble offers several ways to obfuscate Go builds, but its unsupported methods, plugins, and runtime APIs matter when planning compatibility. Account for the longer build time and reduced crash details with tiny mode.
