FRRouting
FRRouting (FRR) is a free, open-source routing protocol suite for Linux and Unix platforms.
What FRRouting is
FRRouting (FRR) is a free, open-source routing protocol suite for Linux and Unix platforms. It implements BGP, OSPF, RIP, IS-IS, PIM, LDP, BFD, Babel, PBR, OpenFabric, and VRRP, with alpha support for EIGRP and NHRP. Listed uses range from connecting hosts, virtual machines, and containers to networks to LAN switching and routing, Internet access routers, and Internet peering. FRR integrates with native Linux and Unix IP networking stacks. Optional build features include Sysrepo and gRPC northbound plugins and a ZeroMQ handler. The project identifies network architects at ISPs, SaaS infrastructure providers, web businesses, hyperscale services, and Fortune 500 private clouds among its users. Downloads include signed DEB and RPM packages, Snap images, best-effort Docker images, and source tarballs; installation documentation also covers source builds and some Linux distribution packages. FRR can drop elevated privileges after startup and, on Linux with libcap, retain only required capabilities. The project provides Slack and mailing lists for discussion and announcements. Its alpha-state EIGRP and NHRP components do not receive security advisories or CVE identifiers.
Good
- Free and open-source routing software
- Implements a broad set of routing protocols
- Integrates with native Linux and Unix networking stacks
- Offers DEB, RPM, Snap, Docker, and source downloads
Watch out
- EIGRP and NHRP support is alpha
- Alpha EIGRP and NHRP receive no security advisories or CVE identifiers
- Docker images are best-effort
Who it suits
FRR suits network architects and teams managing routing on Linux or Unix systems. It is intended for uses including network connectivity, LAN routing, Internet access, and peering.
Verdict
FRR provides a broad routing protocol suite with multiple package and build options. Note that EIGRP and NHRP are alpha-state and do not receive security advisories or CVE identifiers.
