CoreBDD
CoreBDD is a free, open-source behavior-driven development framework for xUnit.net projects.
What CoreBDD is
CoreBDD is a free, open-source behavior-driven development framework for xUnit.net projects. It targets C# and .NET developers who want Given, When, and Then-style tests. A scenario can use one class with methods for each step, or place the scenario in a single method with step delegates. Method-based scenarios support xUnit InlineData for data-driven tests; class-based scenarios do not yet support data-driven cases. Developers can install a .NET project template or add the CoreBDD NuGet package to an existing xUnit test project. An optional global command-line tool runs tests with Gherkin-style output, scaffolds feature and scenario files, and converts tests to Gherkin or Gherkin to tests. The optional CoreBDD.SpecGeneration library creates Gherkin feature files from tests, including after a test run. The repository provides source code on GitHub, links to VSCode snippets, and identifies the Apache-2.0 license. CoreBDD runs locally and includes Gherkin support; distribution is through the public repository and dotnet packages.
Good
- Free Apache-2.0 open source
- Works with xUnit.net, C#, and .NET
- Gherkin output and file generation
- Project template and NuGet installation
- Optional CLI scaffolding and conversion
Watch out
- Class-based scenarios lack data-driven support
- Self-hosted local execution
- Focused specifically on xUnit.net
Who it suits
It suits C# and .NET teams already using xUnit.net who want behavior-focused test structure and Gherkin workflows. It is intended for local, developer-managed execution.
Verdict
CoreBDD provides a focused BDD layer for xUnit.net, with multiple scenario styles and optional Gherkin tooling. Its free, local distribution fits developers comfortable managing .NET test projects.
