Cloudflare Workflows
Cloudflare Workflows helps developers build durable, multi-step applications on Cloudflare Workers without managing infrastructure.
What Cloudflare Workflows is
Cloudflare Workflows helps developers build durable, multi-step applications on Cloudflare Workers without managing infrastructure. It can retry failed tasks, handle errors, and preserve state for minutes, hours, or weeks. A workflow may pause for seconds, hours, or days, or wait for a webhook, user input, or an external system response before continuing. Instances can be triggered, paused, resumed, or terminated through code or an API. Workflows can call Fetch API requests and Cloudflare services such as R2, KV, and D1, and can be invoked through the Workers API, Wrangler CLI, or REST API. Billing covers CPU time, requests, persisted storage, and steps; waiting does not consume CPU time. The free plan is included with Workers Free, subject to usage limits, and paid pricing starts at $5/mo. Paid plans allow up to five minutes of CPU time per invocation. Workflows cannot be deployed to Workers for Platforms namespaces.
Good
- Retries failed tasks and preserves workflow state.
- Can pause or wait for external events.
- Instances can be managed through code or an API.
- Can call R2, KV, and D1 services.
Watch out
- Cannot deploy to Workers for Platforms namespaces.
- Paid CPU time per invocation is limited to five minutes.
Who it suits
It suits developers building long-running, multi-step applications on Cloudflare Workers that need retries, persisted state, or pauses while awaiting events. It may not fit deployments targeting Workers for Platforms namespaces.
Verdict
Cloudflare Workflows combines durable steps, event waits, and instance controls for applications built on Workers. Review the usage limits and deployment restriction before choosing it.
