Bucardo
Bucardo is a free, open-source system for asynchronous PostgreSQL replication across multiple sources and targets.
What Bucardo is
Bucardo is a free, open-source system for asynchronous PostgreSQL replication across multiple sources and targets. It supports multi-way replication as well as one-direction master-standby setups. Users define named syncs to copy selected tables between a server and one or more other servers. A Perl daemon listens for NOTIFY requests and connects to remote databases to copy data. For multi-source syncs, Bucardo uses a standard conflict handler or a custom handler assigned per table. The configuration database and replication databases must use PostgreSQL 8.1 or higher; the configuration database also needs PL/pgSQL and PL/PerlU. The daemon requires a Unix-like system, has been tested primarily on Linux and macOS, and does not run natively on Windows. Installation options include source, RPM or Debian packages, and FreeBSD Ports. Bucardo does not replicate DDL or schema changes. Truncate replication requires PostgreSQL 8.4 or higher and currently works fully only for pushdelta syncs. The project lists version 5.6.0 as its latest release. Community discussion and requests are directed to a mailing list and IRC channel; End Point Dev offers professional support.
Good
- Supports multi-source and multi-target replication.
- Custom conflict handlers can be set per table.
- Installation options include source and packages.
- Free and open source under a BSD license.
Watch out
- Does not replicate DDL or schema changes.
- Does not run natively on Windows.
- Truncate replication requires PostgreSQL 8.4 or higher.
- Full truncate support is limited to pushdelta syncs.
Who it suits
Bucardo may suit teams managing asynchronous PostgreSQL replication across multiple databases on Unix-like systems. It is less suitable where native Windows operation or replication of schema changes is required.
Verdict
Bucardo provides configurable asynchronous replication for PostgreSQL environments, including multi-way setups and per-table conflict handling. Check its platform, database-version, and schema-change limitations against your replication needs.
