What BSL SignBank is

BSL SignBank is a free online British Sign Language (BSL) dictionary and lexical database associated with the UCL DCAL Research Centre. Look up signs using an English keyword or browse alphabetically, then view video clips showing the signs. Browsing by handshape or location is also available, and researchers can register to request advanced search features. The dictionary draws on the BSL Corpus and Brien’s 1992 Dictionary of British Sign Language/English; the cited corpus includes signing from 249 deaf people across eight UK locations. Regional information covers signs for colours, numbers, countries and UK place names. Additional resources include a two-handed BSL manual alphabet with playback for typed letters at slow, medium or fast speed, plus a quiz on selected signs and where they are used. The web version can be opened and bookmarked in a phone browser. Entries present signs neutrally, without mouthing or a particular facial expression, and there is no BSL-to-English search function. SignBank is not designed to teach BSL on its own; the site recommends interaction with BSL users and/or a course.
