What Anime4K is

Anime4K is a free, open-source set of algorithms for upscaling and denoising anime in real time. It is designed for watching anime at an upscaled resolution and is optimized for native 1080p video encoded with h.264, h.265, or VC-1. Its described techniques include line-art CNN upscalers, line-art deblurring, denoising, and reducing resampling artifacts; line darkening and thinning are experimental features. The listed maximum output resolution is 4K. Anime4K runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and its algorithms can be implemented in any programming language. Installation instructions link GLSL configurations for mpv and Plex on Windows and Linux, and for mpv, IINA, and Plex on Mac. The project says anime reduced to 720p, 480p, or standard definition is not an optimization target, and artifacts in older anime may be difficult to remove.
