Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service
Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) is a managed Kubernetes service for building, operating, and scaling production applications.
What Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service is
Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) is a managed Kubernetes service for building, operating, and scaling production applications. It manages control-plane availability across three AWS Availability Zones and automatically replaces unhealthy control-plane nodes. Workloads can run on Amazon EC2 or AWS Fargate, and EKS Auto Mode can provision and scale compute, storage, and networking infrastructure, patch operating systems, and manage add-ons. For hybrid deployments, it supports cloud, on-premises, and edge workloads through Hybrid Nodes, AWS Outposts, or EKS Anywhere. EKS conforms to Kubernetes and supports compatible upstream applications and tools. AWS integrations include IAM role-based access controls, VPC pod networking, and Application Load Balancers; EKS Capabilities provides managed Argo CD for GitOps across clusters. AWS describes security as a shared responsibility, with customers responsible for guest operating systems, application software, and security group configuration. EKS has no minimum fees or upfront commitments, but worker resources and related charges are separate. Standard version support is $0.10 a month, billed at $0.10 per cluster per hour; extended support is $0.60 a month, billed at $0.60 per cluster per hour.
Good
- Control plane spans three AWS Availability Zones.
- Runs Kubernetes applications on EC2 or Fargate.
- Supports cloud, on-premises, and edge deployments.
- Managed Argo CD supports GitOps across clusters.
Watch out
- No free plan is listed.
- Worker resources and related items are charged separately.
- Customers manage guest operating systems and application software.
- Basic Support Plan does not include technical support.
Who it suits
EKS suits teams running Kubernetes applications across AWS and hybrid environments, including data platforms, internal development platforms, and application modernization work. It may fit teams needing managed control-plane operations and multi-cluster GitOps.
Verdict
EKS combines managed Kubernetes control-plane operations with options for AWS compute and hybrid deployments. Account for separate worker-resource charges and customer security responsibilities when evaluating it.
