What AltTextAPI is

AltTextAPI generates descriptive alt text from image URLs through an API and web service. The maker says it returns text in under two seconds and checks generated alt text against WCAG 2.1 criteria. It lists support for 130+ languages, while the Free plan is limited to English. Connection options include a REST API, JavaScript widget, and WordPress plugin; the widget is described as working with WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Squarespace, and plain HTML. The WordPress plugin can create alt text on upload and process existing media in batches of five. Image URLs must be publicly accessible: the API cannot retrieve images from private networks, including localhost and 127.0.0.1. The maker says images are processed in memory, discarded after generation, and not stored or used for model training. The Free plan costs nothing and includes 50 images per month, after which generation stops until the next billing cycle.
