Short answer: Using an AI voice in a song is most defensible when it is your own voice or you have clear permission to use the singer’s voice, and you follow the music service’s terms and any platform disclosure rules. A voice clone does not by itself settle who owns the song or whether a recording is safe to publish. What Copyright Covers In AI Voice Music

Keep a record of what you wrote, performed, edited, or arranged yourself, and what the AI generated. That helps you describe your contribution accurately if you later need to document it. It does not guarantee that a particular track or voice use is cleared for release.
Whose Voice Is The Model Using?
- Your own voice: A service may let you build a voice model from your recordings. Use recordings you control, and read the service’s terms for uploads, generated tracks, and permitted use.

A Practical Voice-Safe Workflow On Your Phone
- Choose the voice source. Start with your own recording or a voice whose owner has agreed to the intended use. Do not treat a public clip or a YouTube link as permission.
- Write a specific musical brief. For example: “Create an original, slow piano ballad about leaving home, with a warm solo vocal; use my uploaded voice recording as the voice reference; write new lyrics and do not imitate a named singer.” This asks for a musical mood and a permitted voice source without implying a particular artist’s identity.
- Keep your human contribution. Save your lyrics, edits, and arrangement decisions separately from generated material. Record which portions came from the AI so you can describe the work accurately.
- Check rights before export or release. Read the selected plan’s terms for commercial use, voice models, uploads, and source recordings. A tool’s commercial-use statement is not proof that someone else’s voice or recording is cleared.
- Label and upload carefully. Spotify says it supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits and has an AI Persona badge for artist identities that may be AI-generated rather than a real person. - If you used a cover or source recording, have you checked the rights and platform requirements for that recording?
- Have you accurately disclosed realistic synthetic performance where the destination platform requires it?
- Can you distinguish your lyrics, performances, and edits from the material generated by the AI?
Where a service or platform does not state a rule in the information above, check its current terms before publishing. Permission, copyrightability, and a platform’s upload policy are separate questions, so satisfying one does not automatically answer the others.
