It has been just months since Xiaomi launched its new generation of entry levels smartphones, the Redmi A1 and Redmi A1+ both being aimed at the first time smartphone buyers category. Now, there are reports of Xiaomi working on a new handset that would serve to be a step up over the Redmi A1.

There are also some details available on the said phone that have been retrieved from the Federal Communications Commission site. As per the FCC listing, the upcoming phone is being referred to by the model number 23036RN54G. The alpha-numeric sequence again contains cryptic information. For instance, the first four numbers, that is 2302 are the year and month information when the phone is expected to launch, which, in this case, is going to be in February 2023. That said, it shouldn’t be surprising if that is dragged on in March, as is usually the case in the tech world. The Redmi A1, on the other hand, had the model number Xiaomi 220733SL.

Coming back to the FCC listing, the upcoming Xiaomi 23036RN54G is slated to come powered by a new processor having model number MT6765X which again points to the MediaTek Helio P35 which too is identified by the same model number. This will make for a nice upgrade over the MediaTek Helio A22 processor that currently powers the Redmi A1 and is a basic processor at best.

Other details that the FCC listing reveals is that the new Redmi A1 successor will be running Android 13 right out of the box. The smartphone is also known to have the code name ‘Water’. This is interesting considering that the Redmi A1 and Redmi A1+ have the codenames Ice and Snow respectively. It seems those have melted to become water now. Jokes apart, every other feature of the Redmi A1 and Redmi A1+ is expected to be carried over to the upcoming phone as well, which means a higher rated processor is touted to be the biggest USP of the phone.

As for the Redmi A1 specs, it came with a 6.52-inch HD+ display that had a waterdrop notch at the top and is capable of 400 nits of peak brightness. The phone came powered by a quad-core MediaTek Helio A22 chipset coupled with 3 GB RAM. A 5000 mAh battery keeps the lights on and is backed by 10W fast charging. It features twin rear cameras comprising of an 8 MP primary sensor and a depth sensor while the front gets a 5 MP shooter. The phone runs the Android 12 Go Edition.

Stay tuned for more on this.
