Xiaomi recently launched the Xiaomi 13 flagship phone in China though the company has confirmed they have plans to launch the phone in the rest of the world in the coming months. While that is great, the upcoming launch of the Xiaomi 13 might also signal a significant shift in the company’s future product strategy so far as gaming smartphone offerings are concerned. Company CEO Lei Jun while replying to a user query about whether they plan to release Xiaomi 13 in the rest of the world, confirmed in the affirmative.
Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing further explained how their latest smartphone has a superior display and performance to offer, one that can beat even the best gaming smartphone as well. The Xiaomi executive even went on to say the Xiaomi 13 is so good that one might not have the need to opt for a separate phone for gaming from 2023 onwards.
This has led many to speculate if the Chinese company might be planning to kill its dedicated gaming series of phones and instead pursue only a single flagship range that would serve the dual purpose of general usage as well as advanced gaming. As it is, the company has so far been offering GT branded gaming focussed phones. Then there also are the likes of the Redmi K50 Gaming Edition or the Poco F4 GT that too offer high end processor to offer superior gaming performance but mid-range specs to keep costs low.
The company has launched the Redmi K40 gaming phone powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset last year. It followed that up with the Redmi K50 Gaming Edition this year which features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, the same that also powers the Xiaomi 12 series as well. The latest Xiaomi 13 comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. However, with the advent of the Xiaomi 13, the Redmi K40 or the Poco F4 GT might cease to exist.
That said, Xiaomi also offers the Black Shark series of high-end phones built exclusively for gaming. It now remains to be seen if Xiaomi is prepared to bring the curtains down on the Black Shark series as well or if it intends to keep the series alive along with the flagship phones while doing away with the mid-range gaming devices.
