Backing up your critical data when switching your phone or doing a fresh system install has been quite tedious. There are multiple factors to keep track of and plenty of apps and services to deal with. While backing up, images and contacts are easy and most of the apps and services give you the option to back them up. What is left out is the SMS backup, which we know are legacy in the current day and age but they still hold value for some users.
In this guide, we will go through the steps to take SMS backup on Redmi smartphones and tablets. For the purpose of this guide, we will be attempting to make a backup using the internal backup setting in Xiaomi’s custom MIUI skin on a Redmi smartphone. MIUI on the whole is quite feature-packed and is one of the most widely used custom skins.
We are making this guide using a Redmi Note 7 Pro running the latest MIUI 12 update. Depending on your version of MIUI, some settings might differ.
How To Take SMS Backup on Redmi Smartphones & Tablets
- Go to the Settings panel on your phone.
- Scroll down and choose Additional Settings.
- Now scroll to the bottom and you will see the option to Back up and Restore.
- Choose that and the next screen will have the option to either make a Mobile Device backup, a Computer backup, or Xiaomi Cloud.
- For the sake of simplicity, we will choose the Mobile Device option.
- Upon choosing Mobile Device, the phone will prompt you to enter the passcode if there is any set on the phone.
- After entering the passcode, you will enter the backup option that has an option to backup SMS, Contacts, and Call History, along with the option to backup app data and third-party app data.
- From there tick marks the SMS option and hit the backup button on the bottom.
- If you carried the above step right, you should see a backup appear in the file manager.
How To Restore SMS Backup on Redmi Mobile Phones, Tablets
The process of restoring a backup is also straightforward and involves similar steps for doing it.
- Go to the Settings panel on your phone.
- Scroll down and choose Additional Settings.
- Now scroll to the bottom and you will see the option to ‘Back up and Restore‘.
- Choose that and the next screen will have the option to either make a ‘Mobile Device‘ backup, a ‘Computer‘ backup, or ‘Xiaomi Cloud‘.
- For the sake of simplicity, we will choose the ‘Mobile Device‘ option.
- Upon choosing ‘Mobile Device‘, the phone will prompt you to enter the passcode if there is any set on the phone.
- On the next screen, the Backup page will appear, now swipe right and the Restore option will be active.
- In the Restore area, you should see all the backups that were made.
- Just select the backup file that needs to be restored and hit the restore button.
- If the above step was carried out perfectly, the backup should be restored.
