Overview

Vital’s oscillators reshape wavetable harmonics by stretching, shifting, smearing and skewing them. That gives sound designers a range of ways to transform timbres, while sample conversion, wavetable editing and text-based generation offer distinct starting points for making new ones. The focus is firmly on synthesis: choose another instrument if you want a broad collection of ready-made instrument types rather than a tool for sound creation.

Key features

Wavetables can be made from samples using pitch-splice or vocode, edited directly, or generated from text. Text-to-wavetable is a web service with a five-request daily limit unless a plan unlocks unlimited use. That is enough room for occasional experimentation, but it may constrain a workflow built around frequent prompt generation.

Modulation covers drag-and-drop routing, audio-rate modulation, stereo-splittable and keytracked LFOs, and custom envelope curves. Two routable voice filters and eight routable effects extend the sound-shaping options; an oscilloscope and spectrum viewer help inspect results. MPE and microtonal tuning-file support also serve players working with expressive controllers or nonstandard tunings.

Vital supports VST, VST3, AU and LV2 plugin formats. It requires 64-bit operation and OpenGL 3 or higher, with supported systems including Windows 10+, macOS 10.15+ and Ubuntu Linux 18.04+. Confirm that your system meets those requirements before choosing it.

Pricing

Basic is free and includes 75 presets, 25 wavetables and the full synth features. It is the natural place to start if you want the synthesis tools without paying, though the smaller library gives you fewer included starting points than the paid options.

Plus costs 25.00 USD per once and includes 250 presets, 70 wavetables and full synth features. It suits users who want a larger included library without a recurring payment. Pro costs 80.00 USD per once and expands that to 400+ presets and 150 wavetables, while also unlocking unlimited text-to-wavetable requests. It is the better fit for users who need both a deeper library and frequent text generation.

Subscription costs 5.00 USD per month and includes store credit, subscriber-only packs, unlimited text-to-wavetable and prioritized support through private Discord channels or the forum. It fits users who value those ongoing benefits; unlike Plus and Pro, it is billed monthly. Basic, Plus and Pro all include full synth features, so paying more buys expanded resources or service benefits rather than a different core synth feature set.

Platforms

Vital supports Linux, macOS and Windows, with plugin formats VST, VST3, AU and LV2. Its system requirements are 64-bit operation and OpenGL 3 or higher; supported versions are Windows 10+, macOS 10.15+ and Ubuntu Linux 18.04+.

Who it's for

MPE and microtonal tuning support make it a more fitting choice for users who need those specific capabilities. It is less suitable for buyers primarily seeking a general-purpose instrument collection.

Pros and cons

Pro: The free Basic plan retains full synth features, so the core instrument is accessible without a purchase.
Pro: Sample conversion, wavetable editing and text generation provide several routes to custom wavetables.
Pro: Broad modulation options, routable filters and effects support detailed sound shaping.
Con: Text-to-wavetable is limited to five requests per day unless a plan unlocks unlimited use.
Con: Basic has a smaller included library than Plus or Pro, so users wanting more presets and wavetables must pay.
Con: The 64-bit and OpenGL 3+ requirements rule out systems that do not meet them.

Alternatives

For a free synth on Linux, macOS or Windows, Dexed is another option; its supplied plan is free software under the GPL v3 license. Surge XT is also free and open source under GPL3, and is a virtual instrument plugin for Windows, macOS and Linux.

If you want an instrument focused on orchestral sounds, BBC Symphony Orchestra has a free Discover edition with 34 instruments and 47 techniques, while its Core edition costs 399.00 GBP per once. For modeled piano, Pianoteq has a free trial and paid editions, including Stage at 139.00 USD per once.

IK Multimedia ReSing is another freemium option: its free plan includes two voices, two instruments and one RVC import, but no model generation; the paid plan costs 129.99 USD per once. Repro is a paid alternative with a free trial, priced at 149.00 EUR per once; it includes two synths and requires host software or a DAW.

MASCHINE is a paid option for macOS and Windows, with a Maschine 3 software update for Maschine 2 users at 39.00 USD per month. Trilian is another paid option for macOS and Windows, with its full product download at 299.00 USD per once.

Verdict

Vital is an excellent fit for sound designers who want a full-featured wavetable synth without an upfront cost, then can add library depth or unlimited text generation as needed. Its mix of oscillator warping, flexible modulation and multiple wavetable-creation routes is the main reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a broad instrument library, or if your system misses its graphics and operating-system requirements.
