Overview

SkyEmu covers Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, and can load ROMs from ZIP archives without requiring BIOS files. That makes it a convenient starting point for someone with games across these libraries, rather than a single-system specialist. The project’s stated focus on preserving the systems is backed by practical features, though accuracy varies by console: GBA emulation is significantly more accurate than GB and GBC, while many DS games still have mild graphics and audio issues.

Key features

Four persistent save-state slots with screenshot previews make it easier to keep distinct stopping points and identify them later. Upscaling shaders, color correction and screen ghosting provide useful image adjustments, while controller support, rumble, configurable keybinds and mobile on-screen controls accommodate different devices and play styles.

The web build runs locally through WebAssembly and JavaScript, keeping files on the user's machine; a service worker also enables offline use on more platforms. For users who want to script or connect workflows, SkyEmu offers a REST-like API for asynchronous automation. Release notes also include Retro Achievements, a RetroArch/libretro core and Google Drive save-state sync.

Pricing

SkyEmu is free, with stable builds available at 0.00 USD per free. There is no free trial because there is no paid plan to trial. The free build is a substantial offer for a four-system emulator, but Nintendo DS emulation is beta quality, so players whose main library is DS should weigh that caveat before choosing it.

Platforms

SkyEmu supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Mobile users get on-screen controls as well as controller support; desktop and web users can use configurable keybinds or a game controller. The web build's local operation and offline capability make it particularly useful when installing a native app is undesirable.

Who it's for

SkyEmu is a strong fit for players who want one free emulator for several Nintendo handheld generations, especially those focused on GBA or who value save states, control flexibility and local web operation. It is less suitable for players who require consistently accurate GB/GBC emulation or depend on clean DS graphics and audio across their games.

Pros and cons

Pros

One free, open-source app spans four systems and six platform families, including web.
Four persistent save-state slots with screenshot previews help keep separate playthrough moments organized.
ZIP ROM loading and no BIOS requirement reduce setup friction.
Local web execution and offline support make browser use practical without sending files off-device.

Cons

GB and GBC emulation is less accurate than GBA emulation, limiting its appeal as a definitive choice for those libraries.
Many Nintendo DS games still have mild graphics and audio issues, and DS emulation is beta quality.

Alternatives

For a Nintendo DS-focused choice, melonDS is a free, open-source option for Linux, macOS and Windows; some emulation requires console BIOS and firmware dumps. DeSmuME is another free desktop DS and DS Lite emulator for Linux, macOS and Windows, though it does not support DSi.

If Android is the priority for DS emulation, WatermelonDS is a free Android option. DSperate is a free Linux alternative. For Game Boy libraries, GB Enhanced+ is a free, open-source option for Linux, macOS and Windows.

For a broad multi-system comparison, see Multi-System Emulators; for system-specific shortlists, browse Nintendo DS Emulators, Game Boy Advance Emulators and Game Boy Emulators. Other free options include 3Beans, Pilas-melonDS and dust.

Verdict

Choose SkyEmu if you want a free, open-source emulator that brings four handheld systems to mobile, desktop and web, with useful save states and configurable controls. Its local, offline-capable web build is an added advantage. Look elsewhere if accurate GB/GBC play or dependable DS graphics and audio are your priority.
