Overview

RomM is a self-hosted manager for people who play games through emulators and want one place to organize and browse their ROM collection. Its appeal is the combination of collection tools, cross-device save syncing and browser play; its self-hosted setup makes it a less direct fit for anyone who wants a ready-made hosted service.

Key features

Library organization and enrichment

RomM scans a collection and can enrich entries with data from IGDB, ScreenScraper, LaunchBox and MobyGames. It can also fetch artwork from SteamGridDB and track RetroAchievements. That breadth helps turn a folder of ROMs into a browsable library, while metadata editing gives users room to correct or refine entries.

The project says it supports more than 400 platforms, including multi-disk games, DLC, mods, hacks and manuals. A built-in patcher applies ROM hacks and translations on the fly. For large or varied collections, these features make RomM more than a catalog; users with a small library and no interest in enrichment may have less reason to manage a self-hosted system.

Play and synchronization

Browser play through EmulatorJS and Ruffle requires no additional setup. Saves and states sync across devices, with conflict resolution when versions differ. Together with offline mode and controller support, these options give users flexibility about where and how they play, though the core app remains self-hosted.

Access and integrations

Granular per-user permissions and OIDC single sign-on make RomM better suited to a shared setup than a single-user catalog alone. It also supports ES-DE and Pegasus exports, LaunchBox import, community apps and a REST API. Official clients include a Windows Playnite plugin, the Android handheld launcher Argosy and the Linux handheld client Grout.

Pricing

RomM costs 0.00 USD per free and is free forever under the AGPL-3.0 license, with no paid features or trial. There are no paid tiers to unlock, so the full feature set is not divided by subscription level. The tradeoff is that users need to run a self-hosted app rather than choosing a paid hosted plan.

Platforms

RomM supports Android, iOS, Linux, Windows, web and self-hosted use, and offers an API. It is a multi-platform option with emulator support and controller support. The native iOS app is community-maintained, and the project says its team does not regularly review community-project source code; iOS users should weigh that distinction when choosing a client.

Who it's for

RomM is best for emulator players who want a rich, self-managed collection, cross-device save syncing and options to launch games through a browser or compatible clients. Its permissions, single sign-on and API also suit people integrating a shared library into a broader setup. It is less suited to readers who want a conventional game storefront or would rather not self-host.

Pros and cons

Broad collection support: coverage of more than 400 platforms and support for multi-disk games, DLC, mods, hacks and manuals accommodate varied libraries.
Flexible play and progress: browser play, offline mode, controller support and save/state syncing with conflict resolution give users several ways to access games.
No paid feature tier: the free AGPL-3.0 package includes the product without paid features, and the project says it has no tracking and gives users control of their data.
Self-hosting is part of the deal: users who want a service without managing their own setup should look elsewhere.
Uneven client stewardship: the native iOS app is a community project that the team does not regularly review.

Alternatives

RetroArch is another free, open-source option for users prioritizing an established emulator project across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows; RomM focuses more directly on self-hosted collection management and enrichment.

ES-DE Frontend is worth considering if a frontend for Android, Linux, macOS or Windows better fits your setup. Its Windows, macOS and Linux edition is free and open source, while Android is a paid app.

Pegasus Frontend is a free, open-source choice for Android, Linux, macOS and Windows if a frontend is the priority. Yamata Launcher is another free, open-source option on those platforms.

Bezel may suit users looking for a launcher whose systems and features are free, with optional premium access to deeper AI features. Heroic Games Launcher is a free GPLv3 option for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Gaseous is another free, open-source self-hosted server for Linux, Windows and web if you want to compare self-hosted ROM tools. LaunchBox offers a free Windows starter plan for importing and playing games, with a paid Windows plan at 30.00 USD per once for users who want its Regular tier.

Verdict

Choose RomM if you want a free, self-hosted home for a broad ROM collection, with metadata and artwork enrichment, flexible play options and synced saves. Look elsewhere if self-hosting is a barrier, or if you need an iOS client with regular review by the project team.
