Overview

Reflection is a journaling app for people who want a regular writing practice, guided prompts or a way to reflect aloud. It suits users who value a choice between AI-assisted and AI-free journaling, though the free plan’s limited syncing and one-photo-per-entry cap may constrain a journal spread across devices or rich with images.

Its strongest case is range: guided programs, voice options, imports and several export formats sit alongside private entries. Premium is the better fit for frequent multi-device use and expanded AI tools; occasional writers can start with Free.

Key features

Guidance and AI controls

The AI Coach asks follow-up questions about entries and can help identify recurring patterns. Premium adds AI writing support and unlimited AI search and insights, making it more useful for people who want to revisit themes across a growing journal. A toggle disables all AI features while leaving the rest of the app usable, a meaningful choice for anyone who prefers a conventional journal or does not want AI involved.

More than 100 expert-led guides and programs provide structure without requiring a conversation with the coach. Free also includes prompts and reminders, so users can build a routine without subscribing.

Voice and portability

Voice journaling turns spoken entries into text, while Voice Call supports spoken back-and-forth conversations and saves transcripts. These are useful alternatives to typing, though users who primarily want a simple text journal may not need them. Reflection also supports mood tracking, AI summaries and personalized insights.

Users can import from Day One or CSV and export to PDF, JSON or CSV. That flexibility helps people bring an existing journal in or keep a copy in common formats. Premium includes PDF exports, while Free includes imports and exports.

Privacy and integrations

The maker says entries are encrypted at rest with AES-256 and in transit with TLS 1.2 or greater, and are not used to train AI models. It says journal data is stored with Google Cloud, which it describes as certified for ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 1 and SOC 2, and adherent to GDPR. These protections may reassure privacy-conscious users, but they do not remove the option to avoid AI: all AI features can be disabled.

Reflection MCP is a Premium beta that lets tools including Claude and ChatGPT read and write journal entries. That is a specialized option for users who want to connect their journal to those tools, not a reason to subscribe for everyone. Support typically responds within a day or two by email at hello@reflection.app.

Pricing

Reflection is freemium, with a 7-day trial. Free Forever costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited private entries, one photo per entry, limited syncing, prompts, reminders, and imports and exports. It is a credible starting point for one-device or light use, but the photo and syncing limits matter if a journal is used across devices or depends on images.

Premium Yearly costs 5.75 USD per year (billed Per month, billed annually.). Premium Monthly costs 8.00 USD per month (billed Per month.). Both paid plans include unlimited AI search and insights, AI writing support, cross-device syncing, multiple photos, rich text, advanced privacy settings and PDF exports. Yearly is the lower-cost route for committed users; Monthly avoids an annual billing commitment but costs more. Choose either if Free’s syncing or photo caps are a real obstacle, or if the added AI tools and writing options matter.

Platforms

Reflection is available on Android, iOS, macOS and the web. Its broad platform coverage suits people who want access beyond a single mobile device, although Free’s limited syncing makes Premium more practical for keeping use across devices.

Who it's for

Reflection is best for people seeking a consistent self-reflection practice, personal growth or guided writing, especially those who want to move between written, spoken and prompted journaling. It is less compelling for someone who needs unlimited cross-device syncing and frequent photos but will not pay, or who wants a journal without guided or AI-oriented tools.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 100 expert-led guides and programs give structured writers plenty of direction.
Pros: AI is optional via a single toggle, so users can keep journaling without the coach.
Pros: Voice entries, saved Voice Call transcripts, imports and multiple export formats offer useful ways to capture and retain writing.
Cons: Free limits syncing and allows only one photo per entry, which can frustrate multi-device or image-heavy use.
Cons: Unlimited AI search and insights and AI writing support are reserved for Premium.
Cons: The yearly plan is billed annually despite its per-month price presentation; Monthly is the more expensive alternative.

Alternatives

For a more flexible free voice-journaling option, Dayora offers unlimited entries and voice transcription on a broader range of platforms, but its free Reflect chat is capped at 300 messages a d. Pick it if that free voice and chat mix fits better than Reflection’s guide library and Premium upgrades.

Auricle is worth considering for an iOS, macOS or web journal centered on AI follow-up questions: its Free plan has unlimited entries and AI follow-up, while Premium adds a full multi-turn AI interview for 2.99 USD per month (the provided plan description is truncated).

Memex is a free Android and iOS option if avoiding a subscription matters most; its AI features require a configured model service, which may incur provider charges.

Mindsera may suit users who want a journal with a habit tracker, passcode, tags, smart highlights and data export in its Curious plan; Genius costs 14.99 USD per month.

Stoic is another freemium choice across Android, iOS, macOS and web, with Premium unlocking additional guided journals, reflections, exercises, mood and habit tracking.

Reflect is a narrower Android and iOS alternative if a free core journal with mood tracking, themes and limited AI usage is enough.

Yorishiro may fit users who want a free journal with extensive appearance choices, data export and fixed monthly allowances for AI analyses and conversations.

Nuju is an option for a short, constrained free journaling format, with one personal reveal, mood check-ins and three saved entries in its Free plan.

Verdict

Choose Reflection if you want a guided journal that can work by typing or voice, with exports and the option to switch off AI. Its Free plan is a sensible entry point, but frequent multi-device users and anyone who wants more photos or Premium’s expanded AI tools should expect to pay. If those upgrades do not justify a subscription, a free alternative with a better-matched limit is the stronger choice.
