Overview

OpenRFID Middleware is open-source software for connecting RFID readers to business applications. It is best suited to technical teams integrating varied hardware with systems such as ERPs, warehouse platforms or cloud APIs. Its protocol coverage and outage handling make it a capable integration layer, but adopting it means working with a .NET prerequisite and a project without releases or packages.

Key features

The plugin interface covers LLRP, Impinj Octane, Zebra FX, Identium and Alien readers, plus TCP/UDP sockets, serial connections and MQTT. That breadth can simplify mixed-reader deployments by giving teams one middleware layer to connect different devices. Filtering options include sliding-window and shift-based deduplication, RSSI thresholds, antenna masking and EPC pattern rules, which help prevent duplicate or unwanted reads from burdening downstream applications.

For dispatch, teams can use HTTP GET, POST, PUT or PATCH, customize headers, and build payloads with Liquid or Handlebars templates. Supported formats include JSON, form-data, XML and CSV; WebSockets and MQTT provide additional communication paths. This flexibility suits systems with differing interfaces, though it also leaves integration and configuration work with the deploying team.

A persistent SQLite WAL queue holds tag data during network outages and retransmits it when connectivity returns. Automatic reader reconnection and exponential backoff add resilience when connections fail. The management dashboard, live telemetry, diagnostics and WebSocket logs help operators monitor activity, while an OpenAPI/Swagger REST API supports management. API key authentication can be enabled with the ApiKey parameter, requiring an X-API-Key header; custom authorization tokens and static keys in HTTP headers are also supported. No security certification is stated.

Local deployment uses the .NET CLI, with Docker Compose as an optional route. Teams need the .NET 10.0 SDK or a .NET 8.0+ compatible build target. The MIT license permits open-source use, but the repository has no releases or packages, so teams should be prepared to manage deployment from the project rather than rely on packaged releases.

Pricing

OpenRFID Middleware is free: the OpenRFID Middleware plan is free and is open-source under the MIT License. That makes it a practical option for teams able to provide their own deployment and integration effort. Read-event analytics, movement history and API access are included. There are no paid tiers or plan-specific seat or usage caps stated.

Platforms

OpenRFID Middleware supports API, Linux, self-hosted, web and Windows environments. Its documented .NET prerequisite and local CLI or optional Docker Compose deployment make it a better fit for teams comfortable operating software in their own environment than for buyers seeking a packaged, managed rollout.

Who it's for

Choose it when you need to connect different RFID reader protocols to existing enterprise applications and want control over filtering, payload formats and dispatch. Its persistent queue is valuable where temporary network outages should not interrupt tag capture. It is less suitable for teams that need a packaged release path or cannot accommodate the .NET build prerequisite.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad reader and connection support can serve mixed hardware environments through one integration layer.
Pros: Filtering, templated payloads and multiple dispatch paths allow data handling to match varied upstream systems.
Pros: Persistent outage buffering and automatic reconnection help preserve operation through network interruptions.
Cons: The .NET SDK or compatible build target is a deployment prerequisite.
Cons: The repository has no releases or packages, which makes adoption less turnkey.

Alternatives

Explore the RFID Software category for more options. TagMatiks is a freemium alternative with free plans capped at 500 scans or 99 active assets; consider it if those limits suit your needs and its Android and iOS support matters. Senitron Athena uses custom pricing, so it is an option for buyers prepared to request a quote. RFTrack offers on-premise perpetual-license and on-demand plans with custom pricing; consider it if those commercial deployment models fit better. AMG Read Stream is a paid enterprise RFID inventory tracking product for cloud or on-premises deployment, for teams looking for that focus. AssetPulse is a paid alternative with a free trial, suitable for buyers who want to evaluate before committing. HID Approve is paid consumer and workforce authentication software delivered as a mobile app or SDK, rather than an RFID middleware match. Sensormatic TrueVUE Cloud offers cloud SaaS and retailer-cloud deployment for RFID-powered retail inventory intelligence. Xemelgo Inventory Management is another paid option for inventory management.

Verdict

OpenRFID Middleware is a strong fit for technical teams that need a free, flexible bridge across varied RFID readers and upstream systems, particularly where outage buffering matters. Its main advantage is the combination of protocol breadth, configurable data handling and persistent queuing. Look elsewhere if you need packaged releases or a deployment that avoids the documented .NET requirement.
