Overview

Nx is a build system for JavaScript and TypeScript monorepos, with plugins that reach beyond those languages. It suits developers coordinating tasks across a shared repository; its strongest case is bringing dependency-aware execution, caching and code generation together.

Nx was founded in 2016 by former Googlers Jeff Cross and Victor Savkin. Its scope also touches Build Automation Software, Monorepo Management Tools and Code Generators.

Key features

Task graphs and parallel execution: Nx maps project and task dependencies, runs work in the required order and parallelizes independent tasks when possible. This is useful when a repository contains interdependent projects, though the benefit depends on having tasks and dependencies represented in Nx.
Local and shared caching: Nx Core includes local caching. Nx Cloud adds a remote cache shared across a team and CI, so cache benefits can extend beyond one developer’s machine. That shared capability is subject to Cloud plan limits and charges.
Distributed CI: Nx Cloud can distribute tasks across Nx Agents and dynamically pack them based on CPU and memory use. This is aimed at CI workloads; teams should weigh the potential fit against concurrent-connection and usage costs.
Plugins and code changes: Plugins can infer tasks, generate or modify code, update dependencies and provide executors. Nx documents integrations spanning Angular, React, Vue, Node.js, Java, .NET, Vite, Webpack, Rspack, Jest, Cypress and Playwright, among other tools.
CI and security controls: Nx provides workflow setup for GitHub, CircleCI, GitLab, Azure Pipelines, Jenkins and Bitbucket Pipelines. Nx Cloud describes trusted-branch cache writes, artifact traceability and invalidation of artifacts made with revoked tokens. API communications are encrypted in transit, and task artifacts can be encrypted end to end before remote caching.

Pricing

Nx uses a freemium model, with paid plans from $29/mo. A free trial is available, though its length is not given.

Hobby — 0.00 USD per free: Free forever, with 50,000 credits resetting monthly, 5 contributors, 10 concurrent CI connections and community support. Nx positions it for individuals and small teams exploring Nx Cloud. The firm caps make it a sensible starting point, but Cloud features turn off when monthly credits run out until the next reset.
Team — 29.00 USD per month: Includes $29/month in usage credit and email support. Additional usage costs $5.50 per 10,000 credits, contributors cost $19 each, and concurrent CI connections cost $2.25 each. The included credit provides some usage before additional credit charges, but contributor and connection charges mean $29/month is not necessarily the full team cost.
Enterprise — custom pricing: Includes complete feature access, dedicated support and SLAs, isolated or self-hosted deployment, and SSO/SAML. It is the relevant tier for organizations needing those deployment and support options, rather than a low-cost extension of Hobby.

Platforms

Nx supports Linux, macOS and Windows, along with web and self-hosted environments. Its documented technology and CI integrations let teams connect it with a range of application stacks and pipeline providers.

Who it's for

Nx is a strong fit for JavaScript and TypeScript teams managing multiple related projects in a monorepo, particularly when they want dependency-aware tasks, shared caching or distributed CI. Its plugins also make it relevant to teams working in other languages. Hobby gives individuals and small teams a bounded way to explore Nx Cloud; teams relying on shared Cloud features at scale should account for usage, contributors and CI connections. Those wanting a free build system without Nx Cloud’s metered team costs may prefer an alternative.

Pros and cons

Pro: Graph-based ordering and parallel execution address both dependencies and independent work across repository tasks.
Pro: Local caching is included in Nx Core, while Nx Cloud can share cache results across a team and CI.
Pro: Plugins combine task inference and code generation with migrations and broad documented integrations.
Con: Hobby’s monthly credit ceiling disables Nx Cloud features until reset, which can interrupt Cloud-dependent workflows.
Con: Team’s base subscription is only part of the potential bill: extra credits, contributors and concurrent CI connections have separate charges.

Alternatives

Choose Bazel if you want Google’s free, open-source build and test tool instead. Buck2 is another free build system, from Meta. Gradle offers a free, open-source build system. Pants is free under the Apache License 2.0. For a free JavaScript monorepo manager installable via npm, consider Rush. AWS CodeBuild is a pay-as-you-go build service charged according to build duration and selected compute type. Xmake and moon are also alternatives.

Verdict

Choose Nx if your team needs one system to coordinate monorepo tasks, cache results and extend workflows through plugins, with Nx Cloud available for shared caching and distributed CI. Its main drawback is the Cloud cost structure: Hobby has a hard monthly cutoff, and Team can grow beyond its base price through credits, contributors and CI connections. For teams unwilling to manage those limits and add-on charges, a free alternative is the more straightforward choice.
