Overview

NodeBB brings topic discussions, live chat, member groups and moderation into one community platform. Members can post with a WYSIWYG editor or Markdown, while follows, likes and topic subscriptions generate notifications. Groups have activity feeds, and tags help members organize discussions and follow subjects.

Administrators can create unlimited administrator and moderator accounts and configure permissions for each. A public Read API and RESTful Write API support software integrations. NodeBB says more than 500 plugins and themes can be installed from its control panel, giving communities room to tailor the platform, though third-party extensions introduce considerations for data handling and security.

Founded in 2014 by three developers, NodeBB, Inc. is headquartered in Canada. The company identifies brand communities and product-support boards as use cases.

Key features

Flexible posting: WYSIWYG and Markdown editors accommodate members who prefer visual composition as well as those who want to format text directly.
Live activity: Real-time chat and notifications for follows, likes and subscribed topics keep discussions connected beyond individual posts.
Groups and tags: Member-created groups with activity feeds and followable tags help structure a community around interests or subgroups.
Administration: Unlimited administrator and moderator accounts with per-account permissions suit teams that need to divide community oversight.
Extensions and integration: The control panel offers over 500 plugins and themes; the Read and Write APIs provide routes for integrations. Solr and Elasticsearch search require third-party plugins rather than coming built into the basic search setup.
Spam and safety: Spam-prevention integrations include Akismet, StopForumSpam and Project Honeypot. NodeBB runs a bug bounty program, but eligible testing is confined to try.nodebb.org and excludes third-party plugins.
Privacy: Registration presents users with data and rights information and requires affirmative consent. Plugins and themes may collect additional data outside NodeBB's DPA, so operators should account for extensions when assessing privacy obligations.

Pricing

NodeBB offers a free self-hosted edition and hosted plans starting at 20.00 USD per month. Paid hosting includes SSL, custom plugins, a custom domain, unlimited staff users and priority support; higher tiers mainly raise pageview and storage allowances and increase backup frequency.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Self-hosted	0.00 USD per free	Free to download and install under GPLv3 on your own server; open-source software.
Starter	20.00 USD per month	50,000 pageviews, 5gb storage, unlimited staff users, weekly backups, SSL, custom plugins, custom domain and priority support.
Hamlet	100.00 USD per month	500,000 pageviews, 20gb storage, unlimited staff users, daily backups, SSL, custom plugins, custom domain and priority support.
Village	250.00 USD per month	2,000,000 pageviews, 100gb storage, unlimited staff users, daily backups, SSL, custom plugins, custom domain and priority support.
City	750.00 USD per month	10,000,000 pageviews, 300gb storage, unlimited staff users, daily backups, SSL, custom plugins, custom domain and priority support.
Enterprise Solutions	Custom pricing	Custom integrations and feature development, theme customization, single sign-on, migration services, and premium hosting or self-hosting.

Starter fits smaller communities that can stay within 50,000 pageviews and 5gb storage; its weekly rather than daily backups are the main operational trade-off against higher hosted tiers. Hamlet, Village and City step up capacity for busier communities, with daily backups across all three. Unlimited staff users mean the listed hosted tiers do not impose a staff-seat cap. Self-hosting avoids a hosting charge but puts installation and server operation on the organization. A 14-day trial is offered; no trial-to-paid terms are stated.

Platforms

NodeBB supports web use and lists API, Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted platforms. Its documentation provides installation guides for Linux distributions, macOS and Windows, as well as cloud deployment options including Docker. This range favors organizations willing to manage deployment choices; paid hosting is the alternative for teams that prefer not to run their own server.

Who it's for

NodeBB is a strong fit for brands, product teams and organizations that want a dedicated forum with granular staff permissions, extensible presentation and options to self-host or pay for managed hosting. Its unlimited staff accounts are useful when moderation responsibilities are shared across a team.

It is less compelling for operators who need advanced search without relying on third-party plugins, or who want to avoid reviewing extension privacy and security implications. Communities that need a small, free hosted service should also distinguish NodeBB's free self-hosted software from its paid hosting plans.

Whaller may suit a smaller group seeking a free plan capped at 100 members, five spheres and one organization.
Octo is another free option for a community of 0–99 users, with one admin and 10 GB disk space on its Free / Start plan.
HumHub is an alternative with a self-hosted AGPLv3 Community Edition and module marketplace access.
Reddit is an alternative community platform.
UNA is an alternative community platform.
Meetup may be a better match for group-based in-person events; its Starter plan includes one group and two in-person events per month.

Verdict

Choose NodeBB if you want a configurable forum with capable moderation, multiple deployment paths and room to extend it through plugins or APIs. Its clearest advantage is the combination of unlimited staff users and self-hosting or hosted choices; look elsewhere if built-in advanced search or tighter control over third-party extension exposure is central to your decision.
