Overview

Nmap is a network discovery and security-auditing utility for administrators and security practitioners who need to map hosts, ports, and services. It is strongest as a flexible, scriptable network mapper; it is not a substitute for a comprehensive vulnerability scanner.

Key features

Discovery and administration

TCP and UDP port scans, ping sweeps, operating-system detection, and service-version detection make Nmap useful for inventorying a network and checking what is reachable. Those same capabilities support service-upgrade planning and uptime monitoring, but interpreting scans and acting on their results still requires network knowledge.

Most scan types require privileged access to send and receive raw packets. Without it, users can run connect and FTP bounce scans, but that is a narrower set of options. This requirement can complicate use in restricted environments.

Automation and companion tools

The Nmap Scripting Engine runs bundled or user-written scripts in parallel, automating tasks such as discovery and vulnerability checks. That flexibility is valuable when repeatable checks matter, but Nmap's scripts do not make it a comprehensive vulnerability scanner.

The suite includes Zenmap for a graphical interface and results viewing, Ncat for data transfer and debugging, Ndiff for comparing scan results, and Nping for packet generation and response analysis. This gives network practitioners several related tools alongside the scanner rather than just a command-line executable. For software integration, the project recommends running Nmap and parsing its XML output; other output and data-file approaches are also permitted.

Security and support

Source code is available for inspection and security auditing. The free end-user version has no warranty and relies on community support; commercial technical support is included with active OEM maintenance subscriptions. Nmap's stated scope is network discovery and auditing, not comprehensive vulnerability assessment.

Pricing

Nmap is free for end users. The free license does not permit redistribution within commercial software or hardware products. Companies embedding Nmap in products need an OEM license, with pricing and eligibility varying by company size and license term.

Plan	Price and terms	Best fit
Free end-user license	0.00 USD per free	Individuals and organizations using Nmap without commercial product redistribution.
Small/Startup OEM, quarterly	9980.00 USD per month; billed $9,980 per 3 months. Includes maintenance and all company products.	Eligible small or startup companies needing redistribution across their products.
Mid-Sized OEM, quarterly	13980.00 USD per month; billed $13,980 every 3 months. Includes maintenance and all company products.	Eligible mid-sized companies distributing Nmap across their products.
Enterprise OEM, quarterly	17980.00 USD per month; billed $17,980 every 3 months. Includes maintenance and redistribution in a product line or category.	Enterprises whose redistribution is limited to a product line or category.
Small/Startup OEM, perpetual	59980.00 USD per once; billed US$59,980 one-time. Optional annual maintenance US$17,980. All company products; eligibility: 50 or fewer employees and no more than US$10 million revenue.	Qualifying smaller companies preferring a perpetual license, with maintenance optional.
Mid-Sized OEM, perpetual	89980.00 USD per once; billed $89,980 one-time. Optional annual maintenance $22,980. All company products; eligibility: 500 or fewer employees, revenue under US$200 million, and, if publicly traded, market capitalization under $1 billion.	Qualifying mid-sized companies seeking a perpetual license across their products.
Enterprise OEM, perpetual	119980.00 USD per once; billed $119,980 one-time. Optional annual maintenance $29,980. Redistribution in a product line or category; no per-seat royalties.	Enterprises wanting a perpetual license for a product line or category.

The quarterly OEM term license can be terminated for a full refund within its first 30 days. Perpetual OEM licenses include six months to cancel for a full refund. The free option avoids OEM costs, but cannot be bundled into commercial products; OEM licenses are a substantial additional expense for that use.

Platforms

Nmap supports Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, Amiga, and HP-UX. It is a desktop and self-hosted tool with a command-line interface, path visualization, DNS diagnostics, and packet-loss analysis.

Who it's for

Nmap suits network administrators who need to discover hosts and services, maintain inventories, and monitor availability, as well as security practitioners who want flexible scans and scriptable checks. Its source availability also suits teams that need to inspect or audit the code. Readers looking for a complete vulnerability-scanning product should choose a dedicated alternative instead.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad host, port, operating-system, and service discovery supports practical inventory and administration work.
Pros: Parallel scripting and four companion utilities extend the suite beyond basic port scans.
Pros: Free end-user use and inspectable source make it accessible and auditable.
Cons: Most scan types require privileged access, limiting scan choices for unprivileged users.
Cons: It is not a comprehensive vulnerability scanner, despite offering vulnerability checks through scripts.
Cons: Commercial redistribution requires a separate OEM license, with quarterly prices starting at 9980.00 USD per month.
Cons: The free version has no warranty and community support rather than commercial technical support.

Alternatives

For another free, open-source port scanner, Naabu or RustScan may suit readers seeking a port-scanning tool without Nmap's broader bundled suite. Angry IP Scanner is another free, open-source option for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Unicornscan is free GPL software with downloadable packages and source.

Readers comparing scanners can browse Port Scanner Software. For vulnerability-focused choices, see Vulnerability Scanning Software; for network checks, see Network Diagnostic Software.

ScanSearch offers a paid Internet Scanner plan at 0.30 USD per month, billed per kpps/month, with 100–10,000 kpps, unlimited results per scan, full CSV/JSON export, and a queue of up to 10 scans. Pentest-Tools Port Scanner has a free tier for open-port and service discovery, plus a NetSec plan starting from $95/month. NetsCLI is a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Nmap Online Scan is a freemium web option with a 10 Scan Credits purchase for 1.99 USD per once.

Verdict

Choose Nmap if you need a free, versatile network mapper with scriptable checks and a useful set of companion tools. Its discovery breadth and open source make it a strong fit for network administration and security auditing, but users who need comprehensive vulnerability scanning or commercial product redistribution without a costly OEM license should look elsewhere.
