Overview

NeoCD/SDL is an SDL-based port of the NeoCD emulator that runs many original NeoGeo CD games. It suits players prepared to provide the required BIOS and handle emulator setup. Its free price is a clear advantage, but BIOS ownership and limits on commercial reuse constrain who can use it.

Key features

Both Player 1 and Player 2 can use a keyboard or a separate joystick, so the emulator accommodates local two-player input without requiring identical controllers. Keyboard shortcuts handle fullscreen, video effects, frameskip, sound, screenshots and quitting. Those controls cover useful playback adjustments, though they do not remove the setup work required to get games running.

NeoCD/SDL needs an uncompressed, 512kb system ROM named neocd.bin. Its documentation says users are not entitled to a copy of the copyrighted BIOS unless they own an original NeoGeo CD console. Players without a console and an eligible BIOS should look elsewhere rather than assume the free emulator includes what it needs to run.

Source and binary downloads are available. Building from source means assembling a platform-specific toolchain: Windows requires MinGW, MSYS, SDL development libraries and NASM; Linux requires SDL source and NASM. This makes the project a better fit for technically comfortable users than for those seeking a turnkey installation. It is distributed without any warranty, including implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes and limits
Free	0.00 USD per free	NeoCD/SDL is free, but selling is prohibited, and reuse of its source code and technical knowledge is limited to non-commercial purposes. Running it also requires an original NeoGeo CD BIOS.

There are no paid tiers to weigh against the free option. The practical cost is the time and compatibility work involved in supplying the BIOS and setting up a build or binary for a supported system; the non-commercial reuse restriction also matters to anyone considering using the code or its technical knowledge in commercial work.

Platforms

The project supports Windows, Linux, BeOS and Dreamcast, and its project page also lists ports for Xbox and PlayStation 2. The directory's listed platforms are Windows and Linux. SDL portions were written by Fosters in 2001 and 2003–2004, which helps explain the project's established, port-oriented character but does not make it a fit for devices outside its supported systems.

Build requirements differ by desktop platform: Windows needs MinGW, MSYS, SDL development libraries and NASM, while Linux needs SDL source and NASM. Readers seeking a port for another system should confirm that the relevant version is usable for their hardware rather than assume every listed port offers the same setup.

Who it's for

NeoCD/SDL makes the most sense for NeoGeo CD owners who can supply the required BIOS, want keyboard or separate-joystick input for up to two players, and are comfortable with emulator setup. It is a poor match for someone without access to a qualifying BIOS, a user who needs warranty-backed software, or a developer seeking to reuse the source commercially.

Pros and cons

Pro: It runs many original NeoGeo CD games, giving owners a free route to playing a substantial part of that library.
Pro: Two players can use keyboards or separate joysticks, with shortcuts for fullscreen, video effects, frameskip, sound and screenshots.
Pro: Source and binary downloads support users who prefer a ready build as well as those who want to compile.
Con: The uncompressed neocd.bin BIOS is mandatory, and the documentation ties entitlement to a BIOS copy to owning an original NeoGeo CD console.
Con: Building requires multiple platform-specific tools, particularly on Windows.
Con: Selling is forbidden, reuse is non-commercial only, and the program comes without warranty.

Alternatives

For a wider NeoGeo emulator directory, start with Neo Geo Emulators. Choose Virtual Jaguar instead if you want an open-source emulator core across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows and are willing to use a libretro frontend such as RetroArch. GnGeo is another free Linux option, but it requires SDL 1.2.x, libz and a NeoGeo BIOS, and its license forbids commercial use of the emulator as a whole.

NeoDS is a free alternative whose emulator code is limited to non-commercial use. Pick DOSBox PSP if you specifically want a PlayStation Portable port of DOSBox with PSP patches. DREAMNEOCD is another free option with a restriction against selling and non-commercial limits on source and technical knowledge reuse. NeoCD/PS2 is free software for a self-hosted setup and requires a NeoGeo CD BIOS that it does not provide. NeoRAGEx is a free Windows emulator, with games and BIOS not included. Geolith is another free option for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Choose NeoCD/SDL if you own an original NeoGeo CD console, can supply its BIOS and want a free emulator with keyboard or separate-joystick support for two players. Its breadth of controls and source and binary downloads make it a useful fit for technically confident owners. Look elsewhere if the BIOS requirement, build setup, warranty disclaimer or non-commercial reuse limits do not suit your needs.
